SOLVED. Boy's Adventure/ survival in the wilderness with pets. [s]

I read this book in the mid-ninety's. The picture was of a boy, a man, a dog and a raccoon in a canoe on a wild river. I believe the author was male. Paperback book about 1/2 inch thick.
time period is probably 80s. US or Canadian wilderness
Plot: boy is flying over the wilderness on his way to aunt and uncle's house to visit. Plane crashes and the boy, the pilot and the pilots dog have to find their way by land. they somehow find a canoe and repair it using an adze (or maybe an awl) at some point a raccoon joins them and the whole crew travel on the river together.
