The Bean Trees is one of those books that I have always felt like I was supposed to have read some time ago. Somehow, however, this year is the first time I have actually gotten around to reading it despite having a copy on my shelves for some time now. I honestly didn't know much about the book before I started reading, other than it always seems to be one Kingsolver's books that most people recommend.

For me, the book started off a bit slowly, but that could be because it's not primarily plot driven. That's not to say that there isn't a plot, but the beginning and through, I would say about two-thirds of the way through the book, the book is more character driven. The pace of the book and the intensity of the plot picks up a bit toward the last third of the book, but, again, this portion is still largerly character-driven
