There's also The Switch where neighbours are involved. Romance, yes, but it isn't quite the main focus of the story for those who may not be fond of romance.

Ooo, I'll have to remember this one!

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 12860 comments Ohhh, I just remembered Heidi's Guide to Four Letter Words, which also had neighbours! I don't normally do chick-lit, but this one was hilarious! won't work for the N-Z unfortunately, but if someone needs one for A-M it's an option, lol.

Anyone have any good fiction recommendations? Or science-y non-fiction.

Troy by Stephen Fry , Mythos The Greek Myths Retold (Stephen Fry's Great Mythology, #1) by Stephen Fry by Stephen fry
The Comfort Book by Matt Haig by Matt Haig
The Relentless Moon (Lady Astronaut Universe, #3) by Mary Robinette Kowal by Mary Robinette Kowal

Too bad it is MPG and not tags. Lots of good books with tags.
The ones I liked or loved are The Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance An Inquiry Into Values (Phaedrus, #1) by Robert M. Pirsig , and one that just came out and has great reviews is The Forty Rules of Love by Elif Shafak

Thanks Andrea! I do have the Relentless Moon that I haven't listened to yet! I have read the Fry books, and his next one, The Odyssey isn't out yet, lazy sod.

Jessi (jazzykitty) | 1644 comments Task: Read a book with the main genre (listed on the first page on GR) as Spiritual

This is meant as MPG correct? or the first full page of tags when you click on more?

I'm possibly overthinking this as I'm very tired and should probably get some sleep now.

message 163: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 8050 comments You are correct. It is the list of genres that comes up on the right side of the page. Not the pages of tags. Too bad that.

Hayley wrote: "has anyone else's little stickfigure not moved? i've read 4 books and still sitting there lol"

Looking at the books you've been reading, they've been alternating between odd and even pages numbers. That means you will have moved east (to the right), west (to the left), east and west and ended up back where you started. If your next book starts in the second half of the alphabet (and fits the task) and you choose to move south, I expect it will move.

Neil Gaimon reads a lot of his.

Ancestors: A History of Britain in Seven Burials is a non-fiction read by Alice Roberts, the author.

Jessi (jazzykitty) | 1644 comments Can I use Spirituality instead of Spiritual as MPG?

message 168: by Viji (new)

Viji | 389 comments I need help on two counts of second task.

1. Sorry for sounding so dense. How do I identify the directions in the maze? I see one opening but do not know whether it opens to East or North

2. Do not understand what is meant by "Read a book shelved (listed on the first page on GR) as first-reads - plurals and spelling acceptable"

Need some links for books shelved as first reads. I tried using the search key words as 'first reads' but landed with more than 20 pages of various lists which do not even resemble 'first reads'. I do not know what I am missing here. Further, can't understand what is meant by "plurals and spelling acceptable".

Thanks.

Sorry Jessi, you can't.

What is the wording of your task, so I can see if it's mpg or tagged/shelved.

Viji wrote: "I need help on two counts of second task.

Directions:
The top of the maze is North. If the opening is to the right, you can move East, on the bottom of the square is South. West is the left side.

So from the starting position uou have the options of East or South depending on your individual maze.

2. On the right hand side of the books page is yheir main genres. At the bottom is a link for top shelves. If you click there it takes you to the first page of tags. Searching through can sometimes get what you want, otherwise you can click on one of the shelves and edit the url to the tag you are looking for.

Plurals - for first reads tag you could also use first read (ie changing from plural to single or vice versa).

Spelling - colour vs color etc when there are variations across languages or mistypes on people's shelves.

For any task where it says either Main genre or shelved, you can use the 1st page of tags.

Vaidehi | 228 comments Hello everyone!

Finally I finished my first book (boring, very boring) for the challenge. Suddenly I had been bombarded with work and social events which gave me next to zero time to read. But I am done with all and back to reading.

My first task was easy but the second one is interesting:
"Read a book where the amazon ship weight for the hardcover is between 1-2 pounds"
hahahaha... I need to search carefully~~~

Look under "product details" on Amazon. You will find "Item Weight" and won't have to actually buy the book. :) For example, I just looked up the hardcover version of one of Janet Evanovich's recent books, and it was 1.06 pounds. Hope that helps.

Thanks Dawn! I found it while scrolling and searching Amazon page. I wanted to read short books (as I had lost many reading days, also wanted to take a short cut) but now my books are all underweight~~~ haha
Finally I found a book from my to-read shelf which had the right weight!
Thanks again for the tip~

Those kind of tasks always drive me nuts, because I'm not really a Kindle reader, so need to use amazon or google book previews - one book at a time! - to try and find them. If you do read on a Kindle or similar device, you should be able to do a search of your library, I believe (but you'd have to ask one of the experts how, lol).

message 188: by Emma (last edited Mar 22, 2022 02:10PM) (new)

Emma | 112 comments If you’re on kindle, open the book and then the search icon and type in the word/ phrases you’re looking for and they should come up. Alternatively, find some one who has a kindle to check their books for you and then read that!

I often search GR's quotes to start. See here: https://www.goodreads.com/search?q=%2...

"For all intents and purposes" is the more common phrase to me, but there are "to all" as well. I think The Eyre Affair and Soulless works.

Edited: The Left Hand of Darkness

I searched through my kindle and found nothing for you. The closest I came to it was "practical purposes". Grr! I'll keep an eye out when I download more. There is a book out there that has that phrase in the title, but it looks boring as hell.

I haven't yet found a way to bulk search books for phrases like this and searching them all individually gets a bit tedious. Hope you find something you want to read soon.

Angie ☯ | 3092 comments If you have a "regular" kindle reader, like a kindle paper white - but not the Kindle Fire (at least not the older one), you can search for a word or phrase in all books on the device. Don't open any books, search for the word/phrase and it will list any books that are downloaded to your kindle with the word/phrase.
