ri (riqtide) | 2 comments It's a Children's with Coming of Age Elements. I probably read this book in my 7th or 8th grade. The protagonist has just completed high school and she has a difficult classmate named "Prudence" who was the epitome of a spoilt, pampered brat as far as I remember. Prudence had a younger brother named something similar to Ben and had a very high breed dog. Her father worked in a company related to ships (import, export, trade i think???). He is involved in a scandal later and runs away from the country with his son. Prudence gets a character development too.

Back to the protagonist. Okay, so her family consists of her parents and three siblings. (Two brothers and a sister; all younger than her) and a dog which they buy sometime in the story. One of the brothers had a microscope. The Red Something (Book Title) refers to a red bungalow the family buys which sorta is the dream home of everyone. However, the father dies in a shipwreck and mother is seriously ill and they're struggling a lot financially. The book shows how the siblings work together for providing better healthcare facilities to their mother and making ends meet. The protagonist takes up a job of being a nanny to three kids with an irresponsible mother (who was prudence's mom's friend). Even the youngest sister puts away all her toys and helps earn. The dog helps too. I don't remember it's name but it was something akin to "Bunny". The brothers repair watches and the youngest sister delievered them. The currency mentioned was Shillings. The gardener and the maid were pretty supportive too. In the end, it turns out that the father survived the shipwreck and had amnesia but was able to recognize a family picture.
