Honestly, I think he was trying to protect Nick more than Max. Nick and David understand each other and share personal family issues that neither share with Max. David was afraid if Max doesn't give Nick another chance, he may need to make a choice between the two.
A combination of both, but I still did not like the way he acted. It was way over the top protective.
David wanted Max and Nick to work it out and be together and that was the primary reason for his hostility to Ryan. David also thought Max was on the rebound and could get hurt. He was definitely out of line with his attitude toward Ryan.
Melissa,I don't see where David was protecting Max. He had a similar reaction to Nick when he first appeared but that was obviously due to trying to protect Max from getting hurt. This felt selfish to me.
Though I think it was a combination of both, it felt more like he was protecting Team Nick. David and Nick are now good friends and he believes Nick is good for Max. His initial hostility towards Ryan was definitely misplaced.
That is another thing it would have been interesting seeing if the series continued: how do David and Ryan work things out.
David was rooting for Nick and Max to work things out. He didn't want another guy getting in the way. I also believe that he thought Ryan was a rebound lover and didn't want Max possibly getting hurt by him.
