I thought I was going to read a campy horror with killer mannequins coming to life. Instead this was a truly disturbing look into the mind of a teenage boy over a summer of death. The story is too short to describe, but one of the blurbs had the perfect line: "unsettling as hell."
It was the disconnect between what I expected (and was in the mood for) and what I got that lost this a star, which is probably on the publisher. Also teenage boys were never my favorite people so spending too much time with one was annoying. I would unreservedly try another book or story by this author.
I recently read my first book by Stephen Graham Jones and was surprised by his ability to pull me into a truly terrifying story. It was so much more subtle than any other horror story I've ever read.
