Alison | 76 comments I am about 40% finished with One Night on the Island by Josie Silver which I consider "a book with a yellow cover" (but let me know if you guys think it isn't!) I should finish this by tomorrow...

I can also listen to Murder at the Lobstah Shack (A Cozy Capers Book Group Mystery 3) by Maddie Day for a "book by an author named Madeline" BUT if you look at the cover, there is a lobster on it...lobsters have shells, right?? So wouldn't this count as a "book with a shell on the cover"? :) Let me know what you think and I will slot it in...

I am reading Aurora Rising (The Aurora Cycle, #1) by Amie Kaufman and I think I see a couple circles on the cover (her eyes, the white dot in the middle of her eye, and I don't know whether you can count the way the "O" is styled on the book's title. So I think this can count as "a book with a circle on the cover"...this can also count for "a book with a sour/grumpy character in it"

I also downloaded Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them which is 117 pages and this would count for "a short book". I can start this/finish this today or tomorrow :)

I didn't think I would get to For the Sake of Elena so I replaced it with Aurora Rising in the plans.

Jennifer AM | 21 comments Checking in, I added the three books I finished this weekend to the completed tab, and my audio hours to the tracking tab.
The books I completed were Sex in the Sea: Our Intimate Connection with Sex-Changing Fish, Romantic Lobsters, Kinky Squid, and Other Salty Erotica of the Deep
Split Tooth
The Passion of Artemisia (set in Italy)

I've also been listening to a little bit of The Cooking Gene: A Journey Through African American Culinary History in the Old South There is so much packed into this one I can only process it in smaller amounts but I should be able to finish it today or tomorrow. I would say it fits either of the meals and food prompts/a circle on the cover/ rural.

I'm off to give my ears a rest and use my eyes to read some of Stay and Fight which has Madeline as an author.

If we are short on yellow covers I have checked out American Spy which I could prioritize if needed.

Edited to add- My hold for The Strawberry Thief should be in at the library and I can pick that one up tomorrow, it is set in France.

Samantha | 1584 comments I finished Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutanto and put it under yellow cover.

I think I should be getting The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley from the library today or tomorrow and that would work for a book set in France.

I have a few more books checked out for my next ATY prompt so will see if one of them fits some of the prompts we have a need for.

message 54: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments I added Jennifer's books into the treat specific tabs.

I haven't read much today, but hope to finish a book this evening after work. I've thought I was going to get an important meal in a few different books, but then it never happens or turns out not to be important, darn!

Eggs count as shells (from the team challenge info), so I think lobster shells should count too, right?!?

Did you like Dial A for Aunties? I read it last year, originally thinking it was a different book that had been recommended to me, and ended up really enjoying it.

message 57: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1584 comments @Traci, I read Jesse Q Sutanto's YA The Obsession a few weeks ago and it wasn't my cup of tea so think I was pretty skeptical going into this but after a bit of a rough start I really enjoyed it as well, a pretty ridiculous but fun read.

I think a lobster shell should count!

message 59: by Irene (last edited Feb 22, 2022 03:11PM) (new)

Irene (irene5) | 914 comments I started The Mysterious Affair At Styles thinking I'd use it for the yellow cover, but it sounds like we might have that one covered (no pun intended) and it seems like it might actually work for the important meal or food playing an important role prompts.

(Can anyone who's read this confirm if this is true? Unless it's a spoiler lol)

The Mysterious Affair At Styles by Agatha Christie

Edit: @Alison, the lobster should definitely count for the shell!! I'm less sure about the yellow covers though because it doesn't seem like either cover is predominantly yellow, the first one seems to be about 40% yellow, 30% green, and 30% blue and the second one is similarly has a yellow sky but not a mostly-yellow cover.

Alison | 76 comments Irene wrote: "I started The Mysterious Affair At Styles thinking I'd use it for the yellow cover, but it sounds like we might have that one covered (no pun intended) and it seems like it might act..."

@Traci, Samantha and Irene: I agree, Lobsters have shells ...Thank You! I will count Murder at the Lobstah Shack as going toward that prompt!:)

@Irene, I listened to The Mysterious Affair at Styles last year and without giving away too much, I think that it would fulfill the prompt about a meal (or tea being in a English household) being an important factor ;)

message 61: by Irene (last edited Feb 22, 2022 04:20PM) (new)

Irene (irene5) | 914 comments Alison wrote: "@Irene, I listened to The Mysterious Affair at Styles last year and without giving away too much, I think that it would fulfill the prompt about a meal..."

Awesome, thanks Alison!! Since the introduction to the book and the blurb on the back both mention poisoning, I thought it would be a safe bet to say food/drink/meals are important to this book :)

message 62: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Kristick | 874 comments I decided to put A Light Beyond the Trenches under a book featuring an important meal. The story is set in WW1 Germany during extreme food shortages, and the protagonists turn a few turnips and leeks into a feast with their imaginations.

message 63: by Alison (new)

Alison | 76 comments Today I completed One Night on the Island and put it under the prompt "newest book by an author you have already read". So it looks like that completes Foccaccia #1 :)
This book was released last week and if any of you like a contemporary romance, I recommend this! Also, if any of you are looking for a book to fulfill ATY prompt #14 (a book with fewer than 5000 GR ratings), this would do it (I used it for this) :)

I also finished Aurora Rising for the prompt "a book with Black and White on the cover". If you want to move it to another prompt (either "a book with a circle on the cover" or "a book with a sour/grumpy character), feel free to do so...I just put it where I thought it would best fit :) I have had this one on my TBR for a while and picked it up after reading Illuminae. This one did not disappoint and was fast paced and fun!

I did copy my completed books over to the completed page but am a little afraid to delete these from the planning page...I don't want to mess anything up! Just to let you know they are still there on the plans page...

Looks like we now have the first column of every prompt finished! Go Team Mixing Bowl! :)

message 64: by RachelG. (new)

RachelG. We seem to be doing really well! I am at the point where I have like 4 books going and none of them are really grabbing my attention so I might just count the pages I have read and find a book that I can focus on.

Are there any prompts that seem like we need to prioritize?

message 65: by RachelG. (new)

RachelG. @ Alison- I deleted the two you had on the planning tab that you posted being completed.

message 66: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments Finished A Decline in Prophets and put it on "next in a series". It fits several, so feel free to move it if needed, of course! I'm still carrying on with Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - I'm hoping to finish it before the end of this, but it's long, lol - plus I'm about a third into One for All, which is conveniently set in France, and just started The Days of Afrekete too. (That one's fairly short, hoping I finish it quickly!)

message 67: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 259 comments Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is a long one! I remember listening to it on audiobook and the author read every single footnote, which made it extra challenging. Then I transitioned over to a hard copy and it was a little easier.

You guys are doing amazing! I’ve had less time to read than I hoped but am going to startHotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet tonight. I’m hoping to finish it in two days.

message 68: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments I plan to finish The Autobiography of Malcolm X by the end of the read-a-thon, but am reading a bit each day and focusing more on shorter/quicker books that can fit other prompts.

I'll finish I'm Telling the Truth, but I'm Lying: Essays tomorrow, which has a few spots it will work.

I also started Act Your Age, Eve Brown today, which will work for next in a series or newest by an author you read. But....then I binge listened to podcasts for 3 hours, so didn't get as much reading done today as planned.

message 69: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments Kathryn wrote: "Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is a long one! I remember listening to it on audiobook and the author read every single footnote, which made it extra challenging. Then I transitioned ove..."

I can imagine it would be a challenge to listen with the footnotes on a first reading! I've read it several times, and I love the audio, but I first read it in hard copy, so I never really had that particular experience, lol.

message 70: by Irene (new)

Irene (irene5) | 914 comments I was very busy these past 2 days so I couldn't get much reading done, but I just finished The Mysterious Affair At Styles and can put it towards our second cannoli so we can finish that one :)

(It's specifically drinks that are important rather than food but I feel like it should still count, right??)

message 71: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments Irene wrote: "(It's specifically drinks that are important rather than food but I feel like it should still count, right??)"

I think that would totally count!

I just finished The Days of Afrekete and put it on an important meal (at least for now)! Next up, These Ghosts Are Family, I think.

message 72: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments I feel like we now have a surplus of food books! That's probably just because I have one checked out and two of the one's I'm reading now happen to also fit (which I didn't realize). They all fit other places too.

I agree, drinks should count. If you drink too much liquid, you have less room for food.

message 73: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments I finished I'm Telling the Truth, but I'm Lying: Essays and slotted it into food plays an important role. It could be moved to red on cover or new author, but those had more options.

I'm trying to decide my next audio. I have books for yellow cover or circle or smile or wilderness. I'm leaning towards the circle book since that helps for one of my other goals.

message 74: by Jennifer AM (new)

Jennifer AM | 21 comments I had a family emergency, my kid broke and arm and knee.

I am on my phone and already lost one post. So I’ll try to be brief. I can get to the computer tomorrow and try to add more details.

Finished The Cooking Gene, I think I put that one in the completed tab.

Today I finished The Wild Silence by Raynor Winn. I think it probably fits best the latest book by an author you’ve read before. (Also wilderness, place to visit, possibly others)

And I finished- Stay and Fight by Madeleine ffitch - obviously a Madeline but also rural area, lots of focus on food like wild foraging more than a specific meal I can check for others tomorrow. I can’t update the google docs from my phone, sorry for no links, but I will try to do that tomorrow just didn’t want to be completely off of updates.

Oh no, I hope your kid is feeling okay now! I updated the spreadsheet with your books (The Cooking Gene was indeed already in the completed tab), feel free to double check it when you're able to, but don't worry about it :)

message 76: by Irene (new)

Irene (irene5) | 914 comments Oh my gosh Jennifer, I hope your kid recovers quickly!! How scary. Thank you for updating us even in spite of that!! I second Roxana - take your time and don't worry about it updating that sheet until you have down time!

message 77: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments Oh no! Sorry to hear this Jennifer. I hope recovery goes as smoothly as possible. Definitely not fun.

message 78: by Alison (new)

Alison | 76 comments Oh Jennifer, I am so sorry to hear this!! An Arm and a Knee...ouch...hopefully recovery is fast and smooth! Kids do bounce back fast!

message 79: by Alison (new)

Alison | 76 comments I finished Murder at the Lobstah Shack for "a book with a shell on the cover"...this is a new cozy mystery series to me and it wasn't on my radar until we had to find a Madeline book :) I read the first one for the Madeline prompt, skipped the second one and read this one. I really like this series and will go back and read the second one this year to catch up! Looks like she is coming out with the 4th book, a Christmas theme, in Sept. 2022 if anyone is interested! You could used Murder at the Lobstah Shack for the ATY prompt "a book related to food or drink" and if you are doing Popsugar this year, it fits prompt #14 "a book with cutlery on the cover or in the title".

I slotted Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them into the prompt "a book used for the 2022 ATY Challenge" because we seem to be covered for the prompt "a short book". Feel free to move this if it needs to be...

I finished Booked to Die and slotted it in the prompt "book by a new to you author". I had intended on it being "a book with a red cover" so feel free to move it if we need to.

I forgot that I had finished Cold Wind on Sunday (I had started it on Friday before the readathon and had more than 100 pages to go on Saturday so I guess this counts :)! I slotted it in "a book set mostly in the wilderness or rural area" but you could move it to "next in a series" or "a book featuring a sour/grumpy character" if it needs to be. Ahhhhh...Joe Picket is one of my favorite mystery series!! Set in Wyoming, he is a game warden with a family and gets himself in all kinds of trouble ;)

I am not sure what prompts that are left are important. I have started a long book House of Sky and Breath which is a long book and I know I won't finish it by Sunday. I will read for the pages :)

message 80: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments I noticed A Cooking Gene was never slotted into a baked good. I put it in 'Circle on the cover' to finish mini rolls, but we can move it to a food one later if we want.

message 81: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments If nothing unforeseen comes up, I should finish three more books before this week is up- Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell can finish our 2nd focaccia at 500+ pages; These Ghosts Are Family could help one more cannoli with a yellow cover; and Lease on Love I’m not sure about, it has a circle on the cover and but it might end up just being extra 😂 I wish it was set in France, but alas!

message 82: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1584 comments I finished Oona Out of Order today and put under book for the ATY challenge.

I am about fourth of the way through The Paris Apartment which is set in France; hopefully I can get through a little more today and perhaps finish early tomorrow. It is kind of slow going for me but maybe it will pick up.

message 83: by Jennifer AM (new)

Jennifer AM | 21 comments Thank you for the well-wishes for my kid. He is doing better, we've got his pain managed and follow-up appointments scheduled.

I have about 100 pages left in The Strawberry Thief which I should finish today. Set in France.

I also have started the audiobook of The Queen of the Night - its 500+ pages and also set in France. I think I will be able to finish it by tomorrow.

You are a trooper still getting reading done with everything you have going on. I hope the pain isn't to bad for your kid!

message 85: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments I finished From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home and slotted it into 'smile on cover'. Also finished Act Your Age, Eve Brown, but wasn't sure where to put it since it didn't fit anywhere we've already started.

message 86: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1584 comments I finished The Paris Apartment and put under a book set in France.

I am not sure what I am going to start next but probably won't finish what ever I choose but who knows...

message 87: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 259 comments I finished Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet and put it in for yellow cover, which gave us another cannoli.

message 88: by Irene (new)

Irene (irene5) | 914 comments Everyone is killing it! It's awesome how many books we've read as a team.

@Traci you could start any new pastry! You never know which ones we'll finish on the last day!

With 1 day left, I'm definitely going to finish my current book for the wilderness prompt, and hopefully I'll finish another that fits either the place you want to visit prompt or new-to-you author.

message 89: by Jennifer AM (new)

Jennifer AM | 21 comments I did finish The Strawberry Thief and added it to the completed spreadsheet and I updated my pages and hours tracking.

message 90: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments I started another mini rolls since we have options for all of the prompts. The others (except Madeleines) also seem like options depending on what gets finished and possibly with some juggling (we have a book we could move to Italy for instance).

message 91: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments I started a book that fits in the wilderness prompt and a couple others, but it might be too long to finish today. I should finish the 2 I have on the spreadsheet.

message 92: by RachelG. (new)

RachelG. i finished A Wrinkle in Thyme earlier today and put it in a book under 250 pages but it would work for red on the cover as well.

I hope to finish my long book Malice today but took it off the sheet because I am not sure I will. If I do I will slot it in a spot open.

message 93: by Jennifer AM (new)

Jennifer AM | 21 comments I finished The Queen of the Night and marked it in the complete spreadsheet.

message 94: by RachelG. (new)

RachelG. I sure had a good time with all of you. I have an hour left of Malice and plan to finish it before bed.

message 95: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments I slotted in my last two, and we finished a 4th mini roll, only 3 prompts away from a 5th. I'm amazed at how many baked goods we completed!

It was nice reading with all of you. Team challenges in read-a-thons are good motivation for me, and this week was great since I was far short of where I wanted to be this month.

message 96: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Kristick | 874 comments This was fun! Glad we accomplished so much as a team.

message 97: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments Oh, and also, I got a LOT of chores done today, thanks to that audiobook I wanted to complete!

message 98: by Irene (new)

Irene (irene5) | 914 comments Finished the book I was reading, plus I'm pages away from finishing my second book (it's 12:04 am so technically after midnight but I always consider it the end of the day when I go to bed rather than if I read a book by 11:59pm). I used both for the 5th mini roll which is now complete! Awesome work team!! Really enjoyed this read-a-thon, and it was so nice to have an active team.

message 99: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 1584 comments I am always impressed with how much reading gets done during these read-a-thons, well done everyone!

message 100: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments I'm a bit late to this (unexpectedly busy yesterday & today!) but this was yet another very fun readathon, thank you to everyone for being a great team, and especially the mods for putting it together! <3
