It's time for our next Read-a-Thon, and we are taking it to the tent for the Great ATY Bake Off!

Around the Year

It's time to fill your bakery case with goodies. You will read books to bake sweets and pastries! Each pastry takes a different number of books, depending on complexity.

You can bake your pastries in any order that you'd like, and you can bake multiple pastries at once (infinite oven space!). Don't forget about your sprinkles! You get some for every 1000 pages read (or 10 hours of audio listed to).

You'll want to create the best bakery case that you can bake, so make sure you have at least one of every type of goodie... they are all important to your score! You can have multiples of the same types of pastries as well.

Alison | 76 comments Hi Team Mixing Bowl...I am looking forward to reading with you all!! I have some books "set aside" for this Readathon and here are some suggestions that may fit into these prompts (depending on what everyone else has in mind) :

Murder on Cape Cod by Maddie Day...**book by an author whose name is Madeline! I am so happy that my library has the audiobook of this so it would be easy to listen to this!

One Night on the Island...**a book with a yellow cover OR **a book set in the wilderness (rural area) OR **The newest book by an author you have already read

The Amazing Mrs. Pollifax...**the next book in a series OR **a book used for the 2022 ATY challenge

For the Sake of Elena...**a book featuring a "sour" character (grumpy...Havers is sour/grumpy) OR **the next book in a series OR **a book used for the 2022 ATY challenge

Irene (irene5) | 914 comments Hi team! Do we enter our names into the spreadsheet for our page tracking and plans? Since I don't see any other way of separating our plans I'll just put my name in but please delete if that's not the way we're supposed to do it!

I plan to read:
Chinese Cinderella: The True Story of an Unwanted Daughter - black/white on cover or 2022 ATY Challenge (nationality/language in title)
(I'm so annoyed that the author/protagonist's name is Adeline, which is so close to Madeline! Haha)

Long Way Down - circle on the cover or 2022 ATY

The Kiss Quotient - new-to-you author

The Candle and the Flame - red on the cover or new-to-you author

If I Had Your Face - ATY challenge and new-to-you author

@Alison you have some really great ones! I think you should add yours to the spreadsheet so we can see which prompts we need more of and which ones we have an excess of!

Sounds Great, Irene! You have some great books planned also! We should have a fun week of reading :)

Yes I'm so excited!! :D

message 7: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments Hi everyone! I'm excited to read with you all!
Oof, some of these are pretty specific, hopefully we can find some books for them.

The book I'm reading now (and will have over 100 pages left of tomorrow) is The Autobiography of Malcolm X and is exactly 500 pages, so can be used there (it also has other spots it would work).

I have to take a closer look at the other books I have after I finish work, and will fill in the spreadsheet then (or if I decide to take a longer break).

message 8: by Irene (new)

Irene (irene5) | 914 comments Hi Traci! Thank goodness you have that 500 page book! :D
Yes some of them are pretty specific but hopefully we'll find out that our books fit them after we finish reading them (the sour character, an important meal that takes place, etc).

message 9: by RachelG. (new)

RachelG. Hi all! I am excited to join you all in the read a thon. I luckily have the whole weekend and Monday off from work so I can read a lot. I added everyone's name to the tracking tab of the spreadsheet in alphabetical order. If I missed someone or misspelled feel free to correct it.

I have lots of books I got in preparation for the week and luckily can download more as needed. I am glad I put Death in Paris on my kindle as I see a book set in France as one of the categories.

Samantha | 1584 comments Hi Team, looking forward to reading with you. I just finished my only in progress book so will be starting fresh tomorrow.

I have 2 books selected right now
Trashed Trashed by Derf Backderf
and
Razorblade Tears Razorblade Tears by S.A. Cosby - Audio book

I seem to have bad luck in pre-picking books for these read-a-thons and this time round is no exception, these two books don't fit a lot of the prompts. On the plus side some of the prompts are a little hard to predict prior to reading so they might fit some of those.

I planned to read Trashed for the earth day prompt, it was a last min choice so I might see if I can find something else tonight. This is one of those prompts I am struggling with what I think "related to" means and finding something that I want to read that fits that.

Looking forward to seeing what everyone is reading and adding some new books to my TBR!

message 11: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments Hi all! Excited to read with y'all, and I love the theme this time!

I'm currently reading Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell and just started Get a Life, Chloe Brown. I've got kind of a huge stack of books I'm hoping to read while it's still February, so hoping to get lots of reading done this week!

message 12: by RachelG. (new)

RachelG. After looking at the prompts I might have to find some food related cozy mysteries I haven't read yet but will wait until after I finish the 2 books I have in progress.

message 13: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Kristick | 874 comments Hi Team Mixing Bowl!

Looking at the books I have on deck, I have several options for the read-a-thon:

Long Story Short - just won the ARC from a Goodreads Giveaway. This could work for a book mostly set in the wilderness (summer camp), a new-to-you author, or maybe a "sour" character (the main character is sent to camp because her parents want to her learn some interpersonal skills, like making a friend, and she doesn't want to)

Hamnet - this is my book club book for next month, and looks like it would work for new-to-you author or a book used for the 2022 ATY Reading Challenge (I'm planning on using it for the NPR Book Concierge prompt)

Plain Bad Heroines - a long book (640 pages), new-to-you author, or red on cover

The Witch's Heart - wilderness setting

message 14: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments I just slotted in the books that I currently have checked out from the library. Most of them don't fit many prompts (and most fit the same prompts!). Like others, I'm hoping for some prompts that it's hard to tell until reading. I might try and find some other books at some point during the week, but a few of these are ones that are due back or that I really want to get read this month.

message 15: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments On another note, glad to see some people have books that fit some of the prompts I thought would be difficult to fill (shell and Madeleine for instance).

message 16: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Kristick | 874 comments I think it's funny that none of the library books I have out have a smiling character on the cover. They all have people on them, but they are all serious.

message 17: by RachelG. (new)

RachelG. It seems to me that almost all the books I have checked out don't have people on them at all.

message 18: by Jennifer AM (new)

Jennifer AM | 21 comments Laurel wrote: "I think it's funny that none of the library books I have out have a smiling character on the cover. They all have people on them, but they are all serious."

I only have one that has a sort of smiling face, lots of faces, but no smiles.

message 19: by Jennifer AM (new)

Jennifer AM | 21 comments Hi Team. This looks like a fun challenge. I'm 19% of the way into The Cooking Gene - so I hope that will still count. If not I'd be happy to go back and listen to the start of it again. That one certainly covers food playing an important role, and featuring an important meal.

I have so much lined up.
Voices from Chernobyl: The Oral History of a Nuclear Disaster - which fits black and white on the cover, but certainly not somewhere I'd like to visit.

Split Tooth which is also black and white, set somewhere I'd like to visit, and a new to me author, and less than 250 pages.

and I just got Violeta which is the newest book by an author I've read.

I'm looking for something set in Italy right now.

message 20: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 259 comments Hi everyone! I just realized that Cleopatra's Daughter takes place in Rome, and since I own that book, I will read that next so we can fill an Italy slot.

I’m hoping I can get Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet from the library in the next few days (I requested it but it’s available at a different branch library).

I’m doing the ATY challenge in order and am currently on the last of the three continents(I’ve read books from Asia and Africa already), which is followed by historical fiction, so these two books will fit in nicely.

I don’t expect to get more than 3 books read for this readathon but hopefully I can make up for that by reading something in some of the harder to fill categories.

Oh hey, I'm likewise doing the main challenge in order and am on my last of the three continents - South America for me, with [book:The Bedlam Stacks|31450615] ; I already finished The Watchmaker of Filigree Street for Europe and The Lost Future of Pepperharrow for Asia. 😊

message 22: by Jennifer AM (new)

Jennifer AM | 21 comments Ok, I was able to pull up the planning spreadsheet and wow, that is helpful. I'm changing my plans, which is no big deal because I enjoy changing plans as much if not more than making them. I found some really interesting things to read to fill out the categories that had the lowest numbers.

I'm still going to finish The Cooking Gene: A Journey Through African American Culinary History in the Old South but my TBR list now looks like:

The Strawberry Thief - set in France (but also, comfort read and if I know Joanne Harris there will be food, meals, etc, and also the most recent book by an author I've read before, but it looks like set in France has only one other entry on the plans tab)
Sex in the Sea: Our Intimate Connection with Sex-Changing Fish, Romantic Lobsters, Kinky Squid, and Other Salty Erotica of the Deep - Flavor word! LOL
Stay and Fight - Author named Madeline
The Passion of Artemisia - Set in Italy

message 23: by Irene (last edited Feb 19, 2022 12:23AM) (new)

Irene (irene5) | 914 comments @Jennifer, I actually read that book last year before my Chernobyl/Ukraine trip this past October! It was a fascinating tour, actually. Also, how great is that Sex in the Sea title xD

@Kathryn, I love Cleopatra's Daughter! I haven't read it in a long time but I'd really love to hear your thoughts on it! I'm a big Michelle Moran fan in general.

I might have to shuffle my books around after seeing the update tracking sheet and look for some more books with a smiling person/circles/shells.

Edit: I can try to read The Summer I Turned Pretty since it has a shell on the cover!

message 24: by Alison (new)

Alison | 76 comments I should finish The Amazing Mrs. Pollifax by tomorrow for "The next book in a series"

I have started listening to Murder on Cape Cod for "a book by an author whose name is Madeline"

I looked at the spreadsheet and it looks like we have all our prompts covered! :)

@Jennifer...Sex in the Sea: Our Intimate Connection with Sex-Changing Fish, Romantic Lobsters, Kinky Squid, and Other Salty Erotica of the Deep...That Title :D I have added this to my TBR...

@Kathryn...I hope you enjoy Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet...I read this last year and enjoyed it!

@ Laurel...I loved Hamnet and I want to read The Witch's Heart this year :)

@Samantha...I have Razorblade Tears on my TBR

@Irene...Long Way Down and Chinese Cinderella: The True Story of an Unwanted Daughter look so interesting!

It looks like I have a lot of books in common with all of You! :)

message 25: by RachelG. (new)

RachelG. I finished my first book Moon Over Soho and put it as a cozy read. I hope to also get The Fossil Hunter: Dinosaurs, Evolution, and the Woman Whose Discoveries Changed the World finished today and make some progress on The Bone Ships.

message 26: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments I'm almost done with this audiobook: Passing by Nella Larsen .
Could this be considered a Mona Lisa smile?

message 27: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments I added a 'complete' tab to the spreadsheet to make it easier to see what options we have for prompts. You can cut and paste from plans to complete when a book is done, or I'm happy to go in and look every once in a while.

message 28: by Alison (new)

Alison | 76 comments Traci wrote: "I'm almost done with this audiobook: Passing by Nella Larsen.

I would say that is a smile!! :)

message 29: by RachelG. (new)

RachelG. @ Traci- Thank you so much for adding the completed tab!

message 30: by Irene (last edited Feb 20, 2022 12:29AM) (new)

Irene (irene5) | 914 comments Thanks Traci! Should we only mark the prompt that we're using our books for on that completed tab to make it more clear?

@Alison, thank you for tackling that Madeleine prompt!

And @Laurel and @RachelG - 640 and 793 pages on Day 1?? You two are amazing!! Our team is the best :D

message 31: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments I finished The Bedlam Stacks and put it on "set mostly in the wilderness" on Mini Rolls, but fyi it does have shells on the cover, if we move on to a second madeleine; that seems potentially like a harder prompt than the wilderness one.

Hoping to finish Get a Life, Chloe Brown tomorrow, fingers crossed!

message 32: by RachelG. (new)

RachelG. I like your idea Irene on coloring in the chosen prompt on the complete tab.

message 33: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments I've also been wondering if we should do some sort of row shading on the plans tab so it's easier to tell what we still need. Though that's more difficult once we start working on additional baked goods.

If anyone has books with eggs or turtles on the cover, that could work for shell too.

message 34: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments Also, great dog yeah finishing the first black forest mini rolls and 4 sprinkles of sprinkles!

message 35: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Kristick | 874 comments We are off to a great start!

message 36: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments Wow, I just saw my previous comment. Phone fail. I don't even know what the 'yeah' was supposed to be! 'Great job' I can figure out!

message 37: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments I finished The Nickel Boys and since all the prompts that fit have already been filled, started a new black forest mini rolls. It could maybe be stretched to say that food played an important role, since there were some ways it indirectly did.

message 38: by RachelG. (new)

RachelG. I finally finished The Bone Ships. My goal for the rest of today is to finish Pasta Imperfect and read Death in Paris.

message 39: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments I finished Get a Life, Chloe Brown last night. Doesn’t fit any of the slots that would help on currently in-progress pastries, so j put it on “someone smiling on the cover” toward a second cannoli.

message 40: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 259 comments Wow, some of you read more pages in two days than I’ll probably read during the entire readathon. Good work, everyone!

I’m making my way through Cleopatra's Daughter and it’s really good! I’m hoping to finish it tomorrow.

message 41: by Samantha (last edited Feb 21, 2022 03:09PM) (new)

Samantha | 1584 comments Kathryn I am always amazed at how many pages some people are able to read during these read-a-thons. I generally feel like a bit of a slow poke.

I finished Razorblade Tears and put it under a new to you author.

I started Dial A for Aunties yesterday hopefully I can get through that quickly. It has a yellow cover and it looks like we could use one of those.

message 42: by RachelG. (new)

RachelG. Laurel, I hope you don't mind but I moved The Bone Ships from A New to You Author to a different category and put Witch's Heart in that spot.

message 43: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Kristick | 874 comments That's fine with me!

message 44: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Kristick | 874 comments Would you call this a yellow cover?

A Peculiar Combination (Electra McDonnell, #1) by Ashley Weaver

message 45: by RachelG. (last edited Feb 21, 2022 08:30PM) (new)

RachelG. Laurel wrote: "Would you call this a yellow cover?

I don't know to be honest. I don't know how much yellow makes a yellow cover.

I have The Shifter Romances The Writer (Nocturne Falls, #6) by Kristen Painter downloaded on my Kindle but it will probably be later in the week before I get to it.

message 46: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Kristick | 874 comments I don't think mine works for yellow. Yours definitely does.

message 47: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 1275 comments I've found some yellows I can grab later in the week if necessary too.

message 48: by Kathryn (last edited Feb 21, 2022 10:57PM) (new)

Kathryn | 259 comments Cleopatra's Daughter was a more of a pageturner than I expected so I finished the book today. I added it for Italy so we can try to get our second cannoli.

message 49: by Irene (last edited Feb 22, 2022 02:29AM) (new)

Irene (irene5) | 914 comments @Kathryn I'm so happy to hear you liked it, I'll have to reread it! It's one of the novels that made me fall in love with historical fiction.

@Laurel personally I don't think so just because it's not predominantly yellow.

I can also try to read a book with a yellow cover this week. It's harder than I thought to find books with food in an important role (from my TBR anyway)

message 50: by RachelG. (new)

RachelG. After work today I hope to finish Fleur de Lies which is set in France so we can get our first Madeleine.
