It's time for our next Read-a-Thon, and we are taking it to the tent for the Great ATY Bake Off!

Around the Year

It's time to fill your bakery case with goodies. You will read books to bake sweets and pastries! Each pastry takes a different number of books, depending on complexity.

You can bake your pastries in any order that you'd like, and you can bake multiple pastries at once (infinite oven space!). Don't forget about your sprinkles! You get some for every 1000 pages read (or 10 hours of audio listed to).

You'll want to create the best bakery case that you can bake, so make sure you have at least one of every type of goodie... they are all important to your score! You can have multiples of the same types of pastries as well.

Kathy E | 3333 comments Hi Team Spatula! Looking forward to reading with all of you.

I have two books going right now and will have over 200 pages left in each so I can count them.

The Weight of Ink by Rachel Kadish, which fits “book over 500 pages” plus a few more prompts.

Music In The Hills by D.E. Stevenson which is a nice comfort read, had black and white on the cover, and more.

I’ve added these to the spreadsheet under the Planning Tab.

Can’t wait for tomorrow to start!

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Hey, Hey!!!! I have to look through what I have out from the library, what's on my plans, what I can get off Scribd and whats on my Kindle, but I have 2 going right now and 2 on the table that I was hoping to start a few days ago.

An Echo in the Bone (Outlander, #7) by Diana Gabaldon The Grace Year by Kim Liggett The Last House on Needless Street Sneak Peek by Catriona Ward Maybe You Should Talk to Someone A Therapist, Her Therapist, and Our Lives Revealed by Lori Gottlieb

All 4 at the moment are on my 2022 ATY plan, 1 is >500 pages (and is the next book in a series) and I still have half left, but will probably set it aside for the week because it has been a slog that I don't think I'll get through. I have an audio in progress so I'll get at least 2 hours of that in while I clean tomorrow, and 2 are by new to me authors.

I'll start adding to the spread sheet when I wake up in the morning

message 5: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Morrison | 478 comments Excited to join you all this coming week. I have three books that I am hoping to get through during the read-a-thon.

Grin and Beard It (Winston Brothers, #2) by Penny Reid The Down Days by Ilze Hugo Medical Apartheid The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the Present by Harriet A. Washington

I’m getting ready for bed now, but Ill add to the spreadsheet in the morning. I work 12 hour shifts both weekend days so I probably wont be able to really get into reading until Monday.

message 6: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments I have just under 150 pages left of The Alice Network. I'm also reading The Hypnotist's Love Story and I Miss You When I Blink: Essays.

I also have some short books that I can read for the challenge after those are completed.

Looking forward to the team challenge!

message 7: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Good morning spatulas! I went through my library books and ATY plan and threw a bunch of options in my TBR column on the spreadsheet.

A quick search this morning led me to Thicker Than Blood byMadeline Sheehan (Zombies! Dystopia!) which is right up my alley, so I'm going to try and finish that up today because I was able to find it on Scribd. That will get one of our harder prompts done. (Ha! Just realized its over 500 pages too- Hopefully it reads quick!!) The others I have in the works also fit for categories.

Don't forget that even if what you read or listen to doesn't match a prompt, we still get sprinkles for pages and hours listened.

Have fun everyone!

message 8: by Meghan (last edited Feb 19, 2022 10:10AM) (new)

Meghan Chiasson | 74 comments Good afternoon! I am so excited for this read-a-thon - I really needed this push.

I am currently reading:
How to Stop Time by Matt Haig The God Game by Danny Tobey Atomic Habits An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones by James Clear
and have two more downloaded:
The Bear by Andrew Krivak With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo

I hope to finish 6-7 books during this challenge.

message 9: by Ana (new)

Ana | 53 comments I went through and picked out a book for each prompt, we’ll see how many I can do, I’ll update the spreadsheet later.

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey Team,

I'm currently working my way through a historical mystery series. Hopefully they will work for some of the prompts. Should definitely get a lot of pages done this week, as I am off work for the entire read-a-thon.

message 11: by Kathy (new)

Kathy E | 3333 comments I didn't finish any books today, but will probably finish one tomorrow. Added my pages for Sprinkles!

message 12: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 215 comments I'm currently reading:
Will by Will Smith Empire of the Vampire (Empire of the Vampire, #1) by Jay Kristoff
They both fit a variety of prompts and I should finish both of them tomorrow. I looked at the planning tab and noticed we had nothing for a Book set in Italy -- I slotted in Call Me By Your Name (Call Me By Your Name, #1) by André Aciman !

message 13: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments I completed The Alice Network

message 14: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments I updated the team spreadsheet for my read. Going to try and read a short one to get that done also. Going to read Speak.

message 15: by Ana (new)

Ana | 53 comments I read A Testament to Murder for a book set in France and added it to the spreadsheet.

message 16: by Tracy (last edited Feb 20, 2022 02:26PM) (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments I should be (**I WILL ) finish Thicker Than Blood tonight.... Took one for the team with this LOL, it's basically The Walking Dead badly written with reallllly unlikeable characters, but it fits for the ATY prompt less than 5000 ratings. With good reason. So I'm OK with that.

message 17: by Tracy (last edited Feb 20, 2022 04:55PM) (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments LOL Who added "Yes! Definitely" to my "? I think The Grace Year takes place in the wilderness" on the spreadsheet. Thank you!

@Tatra- Depending on what other categories start to fill up, I may move your book in the spreadsheet. I can see at least a few other places it would fit (Red on the Cover, or under 250 pages- but I think Joan is working on that today)

message 18: by Kathy (new)

Kathy E | 3333 comments I finished The Weight of Ink today. I put it for "a book with a circle on the cover" since there was only one other book designated for that so far. I moved my column past the currently reading columns.

Should I change the way I'm entering my books in the columns? We have two different ways going.

message 19: by Ana (new)

Ana | 53 comments Tracy wrote: "LOL Who added "Yes! Definitely" to my "? I think The Grace Year takes place in the wilderness" on the spreadsheet. Thank you!

That's fine! A Testament to Murder is also one of my ATY reads. I also added The Heartwood Sea and Anya's Ghost. I'm on a roll today.

message 20: by Kathy (new)

Kathy E | 3333 comments I'll be starting An Appetite for Murder and The Kiss Quotient tomorrow. They both fit a few categories.

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Kathy wrote: "Should I change the way I'm entering my books in the columns? We have two different ways going...."

I added in some color coded columns to make it a little easier ( I hope) to see what we finished. It also adjusts the number of books planned out for each prompt on the main planning page :-)

message 22: by Kathy (new)

Kathy E | 3333 comments That looks good, Tracy!

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

Finished my first book. Added it to the spreadsheet as a Book read for 2022 ATY challenge.

On to my next one.

message 24: by Tracy (last edited Feb 21, 2022 05:30AM) (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Good morning ( or afternoon/evening/night) team!!

We've already collectively read almost 3000 pages together and listened to around 23 hours of audio- that earned us 4 sprinkles of sprinkles so far! We also Finished our first Madeleines.

@Tatra, I moved Testament to Murder over to Mini Rolls- Red on the cover A Testament to Murder by Vivian Conroy , since it brings us closer to finishing that :-)

Started Summer of Salt last night- MUCH needed after the last book I read. I love it so far ( and it was another random pick). After that I need to get started on The Grace Year and The Last House on Needless Street since I need to get them back to the library in 3 days.

I'll move onto a book with a yellow cover next on my kindle.

Hope you're all having fun reading and a great weekend!

message 25: by Tracy (last edited Feb 21, 2022 05:28PM) (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Anyone have a book where someone is smiling on the cover?? I have 126+ books planned this year in total for all of my challenges and not a single one fits. How?????

message 26: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 215 comments I just searched through my books and found three that would work for someone smiling on the cover that I can start tomorrow

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell Gods Behaving Badly by Marie Phillips The Colour of Magic (Discworld, #1; Rincewind, #1) by Terry Pratchett

I have a little over 160 pages left of Empire of the Vampire and 4 hours left of Will. My planned vacation for this week has been cut short unfortunately (someone unexpectedly left the company) so I will be working tonight -- but I should finish my physical book today and the audio book tomorrow.

message 27: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Morrison | 478 comments I worked 44 hours over the past 4 days so it didn't give me a ton of reading time. I'm finally off the next few days and ready to dive in to the read-a-thon.

message 28: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments I wasn't able to read anymore yesterday because I had to do some tax work for my daughter's dance teacher (gives us cheaper tuition!). Usually during the week I listen to audio driving to and from work and I try to read about 50 pages a night.

I should be able to finish my audio book tomorrow. I'm not sure it would count for anything besides hours though. It's I Miss You When I Blink: Essays.

message 29: by Kathy (new)

Kathy E | 3333 comments I finished Music in the Hills and used it for "the next book in a series." Feel free to move it if needed.

message 30: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments I finished 2 today and listened to 2.5 hours of audio. Tomorrow I'll start The Grace Year. Right now, I'm ready for a Netflix Binge!!

Hi Joan - was it for an ATY prompt? Or is this a new author for you? Maybe just a cover with red on it?

message 34: by Tracy (last edited Feb 21, 2022 05:27PM) (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Meghan wrote: ".Hi Joan - was it for an ATY prompt? Or is this a new author for you? Maybe just a cover with red on it?."

Maybe a comfort read? I can't tell if it would work for that but maybe.

"Like a pep talk from a sister, I Miss You When I Blink is the funny, poignant, and deeply affecting book you’ll want to share with all your friends, as you learn what Philpott has figured out along the way: that multiple things can be true of us at once—and that sometimes doing things wrong is the way to do life right. "

Or there a few places we could move Tatra's book again LOL- less than 250 pages, and put this in red on the cover. (Or start doubling up, we still have about a week)

message 35: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 215 comments I finished Empire of the Vampire and added it to the 500+ pages prompt but it can be easily be moved to one of a few others if needed. I'm starting Color of Magic for the smiling face next (it's a short book that I should be able to knock out today). I also have a little less than 3 hours left in my audiobook that I will likely finish today while doing some housecleaning.

message 36: by Meghan (new)

Meghan Chiasson | 74 comments 13 books finished in 3 days! We are killing it team :)

Ended up staying up til 1am to finish the God Game last night. I have a little over two hours left in the audiobook I am in, so hopefully will be able to squeeze that in by EOD.

message 37: by Kathy (new)

Kathy E | 3333 comments I finished The Kiss Quotient, which I added for "a book where food plays an important role." Feel free to move as it does fit other prompts.

message 38: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments I may or may not get in some pages for sprinkles tonight- It's been a busy day after the long weekend and I have no energy to open a book; my kindle will probably put me to sleep as soon as I try to read. I did manage 1.5 hours of Maybe You Should Talk to Someone: A Therapist, Her Therapist, and Our Lives Revealed while driving around today. I have about 6 hours left so I should be done with that by the time the read-a-thon ends. I can use it for the curmudgeonly/sour character (John LOL, for those of you who have read it- it's actually a great book) or for the ATY 2022 prompt.

I also have to say for thriller fans who haven't read The Last House on Needless Street.... DO IT!!!!!!! I'm going to say thriller- it's really not horror. It was so good!!

Summer of Salt was also excellent if you like YA, witchy, magical realism and a little LGBTQ romance. It was a random pick but I'm so glad I stumbled across it. 2 five star reads in one day!! (Anything may have ended up being a 5 star after the Madeline book, ha!)

message 39: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments I should be able to finish listening to I Miss You When I Blink: Essays tomorrow. I haven't read very many pages of The Hypnotist's Love Story yet. I discovered a mess at work that I have to clean up so that took all of my time today. Hoping for better reading time tomorrow!

message 40: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments Meghan wrote: "Joan wrote: "I wasn't able to read anymore yesterday because I had to do some tax work for my daughter's dance teacher (gives us cheaper tuition!). Usually during the week I listen to audio driving..."

Sorry - got stuck on a work project. It's definitely a new to me author. If we need that spot we can put it there. I think there is a red eyelash on it as well. It could also be a comfort read.

message 41: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments I completed I Miss You When I Blink: Essays. I'll see where we need to throw it on the spreadsheet.

How is everyone doing? I'm hoping to get a chunk read tonight.

message 42: by Kathy (new)

Kathy E | 3333 comments Pretty good, Joan! You are too, it looks like. Happy reading tonight.

I've just finished two short books, The Lifted Veil (101 pages) and Harry's Bar: The Life & Times of the Legendary Venice Landmark (192 pages). I'll add them to the spreadsheet a little later.

message 43: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments I ended up starting The Grace Year last night and am having trouble putting it down now that I'm home from work. If I don't stay up late, it'll be done by tomorrow. Not sure what I'll move on to next- depends on the spreadsheet :-)

message 44: by Kathy (new)

Kathy E | 3333 comments That's good to have a book you can't put down, Tracy!

I put The Lifted Veil for "curmudgeonly character" so we've finished a cannoli.
Harry's Bar is for "set in Italy"

message 45: by Ana (last edited Feb 23, 2022 09:25PM) (new)

Ana | 53 comments I read Dreaming of Tuscany and put that in the slot for a place I'd love to visit since set in Italy was filled and I would love to go to Italy.

message 46: by Tracy (new)

I fell asleep reading it last night Kathy!! So exhausted!! I was off to a rough start with the Madeline book, but the last 3 I've read have been SO good! I'm having too much fun reading this week. Lots of work to catch up on today and tomorrow. I'm actually hoping we do have a snow day tomorrow because it will be easier to catch up from home! I hate snow LOL.

Hope your reading ( and everyone's) has been just as amazing :-)

message 47: by Kathy (new)

Kathy E | 3333 comments Finished An Appetite for Murder and put it for "a book with an important meal. So we've finished a focaccia.

My reading will probably slow down. My daughter's visiting so we have stuff planned.

message 48: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 215 comments I finished Astrophysics for People in a Hurry today and added it to a book under 250 pages which finished our first mini roll!

message 49: by Tracy (last edited Feb 25, 2022 07:07AM) (new)

Tracy (tracyisreading) | 2573 comments Finished The Grace Year, Going to hunt down one of these three from my TBR since they're more specific prompts and only have one option each on our spreadsheet:
The Paris Wife ( Set in France)
Remarkable Creatures (Shell on the cover)
The Perfect Marriage(Circle on the cover)

Edit: I owned one of these on my kindle, got one one on Libby and started it last night (Paris wife) and got the other on Scribd- getting my moneys worth for the read-a-thon, it's my first time using it and I'm on my third book. Sad this is almost over :-(

message 50: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 215 comments I finished Verity today and added it to a book used for the AtY challenge. I should finish the audio for Homicide and Halo-Halo before the end of the read-a-thon -- it should work for a variety of prompts so will add it when finished based on what is left. Not sure if I will get a chance to finish any other books before the end of the read-a-thon but will definitely have more pages for sprinkles!
