30.5 Angel **Book Junkie**'s Task: You Either Like it Or You Don’t

Read one book from each of the following options. Books must be at least 250 pages.

NOTE: ebooks without print versions cannot be used for tasks requiring a specific number of pages. If you read an ebook or listen to an audiobook, use the page count for the mass market paperback if one exists. If there is no mass market paperback edition, use the paperback edition and if no paperback is available use the hardcover edition.

Note: Books with the genre Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may be used for this task.

Using this list of genres:
Art, Biography, Business, Chick Lit, Children's, Christian, Classics, Comics, Contemporary, Cookbooks, Crime, Fantasy, Gay And Lesbian (GLBT), Graphic Novels, Historical Fiction, History, Horror, Humor/Comedy, Manga, Memoir, Music, Mystery, Non Fiction, Paranormal, Philosophy, Poetry, Psychology, Religion, Romance, Science, Science Fiction, Self Help, Suspense, Spirituality, Sports, Thriller, Travel, Young Adult
The genres may be stand alone or embedded.

Book 1: Read a book that has your favorite genre on its main page.

Book 2: Read a book that has your least favorite genre on its main page.

Required: State the Genre for each option.

LouLouReads | 221 comments Is it cheating to reread a book that I know I love, regardless of the fact that it has one of my least favourite genres (chick lit) on the main page? ;-)

ETA: Also, do embedded genres count?

I've got a similar question, although not for a reread. I've found a possible for "least", but it also has one of my favourite genres further up the genre list. Could it be used for the "least" option.

Bea Oh my goodness! I have several "leasts" in that list!

Bea Is it cheating if I find an author I like who writes in a genre I usually avoid?

I really do not like GBLT as a genre. I have rated the few books that I have read in that genre with 1* or 2*; that is, until I was introduced to Nicola Griffith. Her writing style is superb! The GBLT aspect of her story is not so much that I cannot see past it to appreciate this storyteller's fiction and writing style. I could read another of her books for LEAST, if you agree.

message 10: by Teri-K (last edited Feb 18, 2015 11:00AM) (new)

Teri-K Can a "least favorite" genre be one we've never actually read, or should it only be one we've read but don't particularly like? I've never read a manga, and thought I might for this task. I've avoided them because they don't appeal to me, but I can't say I actually dislike them since I've never read one.

I, too, need to know if the presence of my favorite genre would exclude certain titles, as in a manga of a classic novel.

Second, if I read manga, many of them seem to take several issues to tell the entire story. I'd need to read all of the issues, right? Because SRC rules require you to not just read one part but all parts, even if they're in separate covers?

Thanks!

Lois | 2632 comments I'm also curious to know if the spirit of the task is to stretch comfort levels and select something we're pretty sure will be dead boring or repulsive; or whether it is to challenge ourselves to find something we're going to like despite the presence of the unloved genre on the book's main page.

Well said. I've been watching this thread very closely. :)

Deborah | 1667 comments While looking at my READ page the genre with the most books is YA, however, the majority of my favorite authors/series are in Urban Fantasy. Can I start a new series/new author with Fantasy or do I need to go with YA?

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments its a toss up between horror and spirituality for me - not a fan of either in general, but a good author can get me to enjoy anything

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 4447 comments Well, my favorite genre is LITERATURE (or literary fiction) ... which isn't on your list.

SO ... I guess I have to pick my favorite from among the genres listed ... do I have that right?

I would prefer you read a book that is outside of your comfort zone. But if your least favorite genre is on the task you can read it!

Yes embedded genres count.

As long as your least favorite genre is listed then yes!

Yes that is fine!

Teri I would have to say that it would need to be one you do not like. Since Manga is one you don't know in this task I am not sure that it fits. You might read it and Love it. Sorry!

I created it to read a genre that you don't like because maybe there is a gem inside that you will find. A new author, a new genre, or maybe that one you thought you hated five years ago is something that intrigues you today.

Sorry it needs to have the genres listed. There are so many that if we kept adding it would probably become difficult for the moderators. Now if you find a literature book that has one of the other genres that you like on it; then that would work!

Angel **Book Junkie** Deborah wrote: "While looking at my READ page the genre with the most books is YA, however, the majority of my favorite authors/series are in Urban Fantasy. Can I start a new series/new author with Fantasy or do I..."

I would say Fantasy because this is the one that you like! The genre that you like is Fantasy so I would pick one that has Fantasy on it. Since it can be embedded then it would work as long as it is on the list!

Angel **Book Junkie** Dee wrote: "its a toss up between horror and spirituality for me - not a fan of either in general, but a good author can get me to enjoy anything"

I think you have caught my point of the challenge. To reach outside the comfort zone and to read a book that you may hate the genre but find that you love it because the author told the story so well!

Thanks for the clarification. I totally understand, and will go find a sports book to read... :)

I was thinking sport, but I haven't read any sport books in the past. So, plan B.

Of the genres I've read, I'm least likely to think "Oh, I really want to read a sports or business book!" But I have read a fair number of decent business books in the past years. I haven't read a sports book since DS moved out. He loved them and I'd sometimes read one so we could talk about it together but that's been many years. So I guess that makes it my least fave. :)

Deedee | 2344 comments For Book #2: I very rarely read graphic novels because I don't care for that form of storytelling. One of the few graphic novels that I have on my TBR is Neil Gaiman's graphic novel The Sandman, Vol. 1: Preludes and Nocturnes. It has won a lot of awards (science fiction/fantasy ones, called an "illustrated narrative" rather than a graphic novel). Additionally, the book was picked as a BOTM awhile back by the SciFi and Fantasy Book Club. Alas, it says it is 240 pages long, which is long for a graphic novel, but 10 pages short of 250. Can I appeal for an override to approve this book for Book #2? If not I'm sure I can find something else from another rarely read/unpopular to me genre. Thanks!!!!

Because normally there are not many challenges that you can read a graphic novel I will approve this one.

message 32: by Bea (new)

Bea Gee, Deedee, you scared me for a minute! I had missed the 250 pages requirement, so I had to go back to check my planned books. Thankfully both were more than 250 pages. Whew!

Angel **Book Junkie** Deedee I am sorry But I have received confirmation and I spoke out of turn. I cannot approve a book that is under the 250 page requirement.

Narumon May I get An Amish Cradle approved for having "Christian" Fiction? It seems like few people read this or shelved this, but those who did enjoyed it. But I'm afraid the genre will drop off in a few days...

The other Christian book I have ever read ended up rubbing me wrong the entire way through (so I'm afraid it's one of my least favorite genres). I thought I'd use this task to give this genre a second try. Since the book has such great reviews and is a collection by a few different authors, perhaps I will find a few that I enjoy!

Kim | 762 comments Will this work for option 2? The Bloom County Library, Vol. 1: 1980-1982

My least favorite genre is graphic novels. I wanted to use The Complete Peanuts, Vol. 1: 1950-1952, but it has "Children's" as a genre.

Thank you
