Will Gurley | 10 comments In Red Queen , Mare and Gisa are sisters in a fantasy set world. They come from a poor family, and Mare doesn't have a job to keep her from going to war, so she pick pockets for money. Gisa (younger sister) sews cloth for the upper class "Silvers", and is the future of her family when it comes to making money. I like the way she stays so calm and collected with her self, and how she is so mature knowing that her whole family relies on her at such a young age.

Foster Pratt | 7 comments A Short History of Nearly Everything

Since this book is largely non-fiction and it doesn't go into a large amount of detail on any one character, I decided to write about the author's voice present in this section. Bill Bryson has such a unique and comforting tone of voice while reading that all the information, even if it's about rock formation, still is comprehensible and understandable. You really can feel his voice and it's almost like he's right there with you, explaining these stories and theories.

My character I chose is the main character, Llewellyn Moss. He is a young man who lives in Texas. He seems fairly reasonable, and he has a wife, yet he makes extremely questionable decisions in the book. This character intrigues me because I can never really figure out what hes thinking or what hes about to do, and he always talks in very abrupt sentences. The worst thing hes done so far is when he found a truck surrounded by a bunch of dead people, he looked inside to find a bunch of money and drugs. He decides to take the money, and now has to run from a bunch of very deadly people.

a. I started reading 1619 today, and the author seems like a fundamental character in the book so far. It is all about her lack of experience with being educated about the black history of America. She writes about her father having an American Flag hoisted in front of their house which she has trouble understanding because from what she can see is that he has been disrespected in the country his entire life, but he feels that since black people were the ones to build the country, they should also have the ability to be proud of the country.

Jocelyn Leigh | 6 comments I read "Citizen" by Claudia Rankine and it talked a lot about Serena Williams, and how she is praised when successful, but she is heavily criticized and shamed for making any mistake. The book talks about how she is put under a microscope by a white audience, and people examine her, and watch closely, waiting for her to make a mistake. Her resilience is what really stood out. Despite the whole world coming down on her, she is still able to remain calm and keep pushing, always reaching success, despite the adversity that is given to her by people who allow their bias to create injustices.

Nina Kaiser | 6 comments In the book Every Last Word, the main character Samanthastood out to me a lot, showing a lot of character growth in the section that I had read. Originally she had been very reserved and had only ever had one set of really shitty friends, but later became friends with a group of people apart of a secret poetry group. In the section I read I was really able to see just how much confidence she was able to gain from being comfortable with this group, along with how her relationship with AJ has started to change.
