Fantasy-boy in village must find sword in mountain. He finds an island of giant trees or of actual giants

I’m not even sure where to begin. The book in question is a book I read 15 years ago in high school. I seem to remember it being a 1970s/80s era title. I remember that the story follows a young boy in a village that was built on another races land( the race is still alive and potentially still communicates with the village) the boy must find a sword in the mountains that have ice and snow of course, he is running away from bad people or a bad thing. He gets in a boat and crashes on an island with giant trees or an island of giants.

Are the races vaguely (or totally) human? Supposed to be Earth, or another fantasy world altogether? Medieval-like or modern?

Anything else about the sword? ;)

Well the village that the story starts in is fully human ( small medieval village ). There is a race close by that is kind of elven. I am not sure if it’s earth or another fantasy world, I do not recall the narrator saying anything about it being a special world or anything but it was many years ago.

I do not remember much more, maybe there were multiple swords the young adventurer had to find. The one I know of was a magical sword that the boy needed to find and it was in the mountains.
