SOLVED. Adult fiction. About two orphan brothers, one named David. [s]

In the prologue the children from the orphanage are playing hide and seek, the older brother, David (I think) runs to an old farmhouse, his little brother follows, David takes the brother inside the house and goes into a secret room. In the room is a trunk David tells brother to get in the trunk and no one will find him. That's all I remember, I read it sometime between 2012 and 2015.

I remember that at the end David was rich and famous for painting (?). The author was a man and I believe his first name began with an "A". It was more of a horror story, the younger boy died in the trunk.

Yes. I think David was haunted by a ghost or guilt.
