Was it supposed to be like a targeted execution/assassination, or was it meant to look like (or perhaps just was) a random drive-by shooting? Even if you don't know the reason - was the shooting execution-style, or random drive-by?

Thank you for getting the ball rolling! I believe it was (at least in appearance), a random drive-by with some kinds of conspiratorial elements.

I'm trying to figure out the title of a fiction book I read in school (between 2016 and 2018). The whole inciting incident was this group of friends getting shot at in their car (? I think it was their car, at least), and at least one of them dying but the other two surviving? One was unharmed physically while one got shot in the head. She was shot at an angle that let her survive (I remember the book dwelled on the angle of the bullet a lot). I don't remember the characters' names but I think?? the main character was South Asian (I also read the Ms. Marvel comic series around this time--so I could be wrong about that though). I think it was set in the modern era. The book cover was orangish? I think? with black and white illustrations? The most important thing about the book is that there were parts of it that were straight-up graphic novel panels. In fact, my school's librarian recommended it to me after I read I Am Princess X, which is also a novel with mystery and graphic novel elements.
If I remember correctly, there were major plot points about who exactly shot at the characters, but I have no recollection of whether that mystery was ever solved (if I did, I would probably be able to google the book haha).
I read this book in probably 2017 or 2018. I got it from my school library. It might have been new--I certainly had never heard of it before.
Thank you for any/all help.
