It was set in "the real world" and was about a character who was not human (I don't remember exactly what he was, but he was a "monster" of sorts) who lived in the woods near a village and was friends with everyone, but he was blamed for a series of children's murders. A mob tried to kill him, and at the end of the story you find out that it was really one of the village boys who was kidnapping and murdering the children. I believe it was told from a first person perspective.
Can anyone tell me what this story is? It's driving me nuts. I read it in an anthology.
And before anyone suggests "Grendel", that's not it.
