I know the book's main character wasn't human, I can't remember the name of the race, but they can't swim. I think they might be like dwarfs but I'm not sure.
I remember that in part of the story the main character is on a ship, and it gets ship wrecked.
He was drowning and gets saved by a mermaid, who was led to him by an albatross. She was going to leave him, because she hated humans, but stays when she learns he isn't.
Later in the story I recall one of them was going to leave, I think the mermaid wanted to go back to her home, but the main character convinces her to go on an adventure with him.
At the end I think I recall that she wanted to show him her world, under water, and she knows a fisherman that can cut him a pair of gills or something of the like.
