Jacqueline | 2428 comments Loving the administrators note at the end…

“Author Martha Wells graciously declined her nomination as a novella finalist this year for Fugitive Telemetry: Murderbot Diaries, Book 6, published by Tordotcom. Wells felt that the Murderbot Diaries series has already received incredible praise from her industry peers and wanted to open the floor to highlight other works within the community.”

Beth (rosewoodpip) | 2005 comments John Scalzi and Ann Leckie have done the same thing in the past, in the even more prestigious gold-crown novel category*. It's an admirable, humble thing to leave the field open for voices that might otherwise have missed their chance.

*do not recall whether it was Hugo or Nebula or both, in either case.

Thanks for popping this list here - working my way through. I need to get on with reading as my TBR (like most of us) is way, way too long.

Best Science Fiction Novel: A Desolation Called Peace, Arkady Martine

Best Fantasy ..."

I felt that the first book in Martine's series promised so much but ultimately became just a murder mystery. It felt like a waste of really great world building. I want to go back to that world though, so I will give Desolation a try and hope she realizes more of its potential.

I tried Master of Djinn on audio, and the narrator's accents felt very heavy handed - I kept thinking of Boris and Natasha in the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons. I love all his other books though, so I think need to start again with the print.

I was so taken by the world building and the Byzantine politics in the first book that I didn't really pay much attention to the murder mystery aspect. Given my fascination with that world building the second book, which was (eventually) more plot heavy, was a bit of a disappointment.

I agree about the audio for A Master of Djinn. Perhaps I might have gotten used to it but I wasn't encouraged by the sample. Reading it is working better for me.
