Book about a cop who is investigating about the death of a man who died on a car crash (accident) but apparently it was a murder

¡Hello! I was trying to read this book last year and didn’t got the chance to finish it, but now I want to finish it I cannot remember the name.

Like I already said it is about a cop who doesn’t really like his job but one man who was really important in politics on USA dies in a car accident. And for everyone it’s just that, a accident, until he realizes something (like, the thing that the road where he died wasn’t actually a big thing and it was weird to see cars right there) and he starts to investigate a possible murder. From what I read the man who died was cheating on his wife with another woman who was Cuban (I think so) and also had a daughter, and there was this man in charge of the newspaper who really liked to bash the hell out of the cop.

I also checked back then the Wikipedia page for the author and it seemed that he was very famous for his crime books. The cover of the book if I remember well was a drowned person and the title of the book was something like “I killed him” or anything similar.

Please help me to find this book, I really wanna finish reading it!

So, the car accident is that he drowns (I guess, in a lake or river) or a crash? I'm assuming that he drowns because of the cover, but want to be sure.

Not particularly important, but can help to eliminate books.

He actually dies in the car accident, but I just remembered there is a character who says that not so far from there a man died drowned
