Dreamland Discussion: Part IV Discussion Questions & Extra Resource

newest »

If you could go back in time, what would you do differently to slow the progression of the epidemic? What issues do you think are the most pervasive in this complex problem?
Given where we are today with the unfolding described in Dreamland coupled with the increased use of opiates during the COVID-19 pandemic, what tools do you think are most important to identify and care for people at risk or addicted to opiates?
Extra Resource:
The extra resource for this discussion is a podcast series on opiate addiction from the National Academy of Medicine. We specifically suggest listening to Episode 4: Addressing the Recent Trends in the Opioid Epidemic. This episode overviews the current state of the crisis and what countermeasures are being taken at various levels of government to assist with the four pillars of action for getting out of the opioid epidemic as identified by the federal government: prevention, harm reduction, treatment, and recovery. If you’re curious, other episodes explore intersectionality with the opioid epidemic and racism, stigma and addiction (connecting to Discussion Post #3), and opioid use trends with the COVID-19 pandemic.
