Review: This may be the first dystopia I've read since the pandemic started, and it's crazy how a book published in 2011 has elements of 2020. Plague? Check. Authoritarian government? Check. Wide gap between rich and poor? Check. I am giving the book 5 stars because it's fast-paced and exciting to read. Yes, it's predictable and the MC's act like dopey teenagers while they're saving the world, but I am ready to read book 2 right away!

I'm not really sure how to describe this book but i will give it a good try. Poppy and Alex. Alex and Poppy. These are probable the 2 most unlikely pairs you run across. They meet on their first day of classes at the University of Chicago. They decide to take a vacation every year - just one week -. So after 12 years things have turned decidedly strained in their relationship. At first i was like what the heck - i know this book is listed as one of the best books of 2021 but i wasnt really sure why until now. The book is written in the "now" but it also written in the "past" . The author makes it easy to get drawn into these 2 people lives and so the reader has no choice but to keep reading because you honestly want to know how they end up later...are they together or not together? I gave it the rating I did strictly for that reason.

Review: Loved everything about this book. Plot, characters, additional worldbuilding -- even the romance. I read the first in series so long ago I barely remembered it.
Slowly the reality of the situation sank in. He got his ass kicked, learned nothing, and got saved by a dumb dog and an old lady.
But I did remember William and was glad to see him out of his shell even if initially on a revenge mission. This couple actually talked, none of that nonsense of chapter after chapter of angst that gets cleared up in the final chapter.

Review: This trilogy combines historical fact with fantastical elements. The third installment is uneven but I enjoyed it. Vasilisa's romance with the Winter King seems to occur naturally, and the ending is bittersweet. Interestingly, I was most engaged during scenes with Vasilisa and her family more so than scenes with the fantasy creatures. I am glad I finished out the trilogy; I waited too long!

This was tagged Magic Users hence the reason for the pick. I was excited to read this book because it was due to be made into a series by Netflix and it was advertised as a "retelling" of King Arthur. I was really not impressed although the illustrations in this book were awesome - that I did enjoy. The story was very slow and the characters really did not grow on me..sad but true. It took a long time to get into the story and did not seem to go anywhere until Merlin appeared in the story. Im not sure if I will watch the series now on Netflix since i did'nt really like the book - i gave it the 3 stars because of the illustrations.

Series: Lizzie Grace, #8
Rating: ★★★½☆
Number of pages: 316
Review: This has become one of my very favorite series. But this entry was disappointing because I was over anticipating a plot point the previous seven books were foreshadowing and the synopsis of this book focused on -- the arrival of Aidan's ex and potentially future fiancee. Talk about a red herring and drama that fizzled ... ugh. The murder mystery part was wrapped up nicely in this book as always but even that seemed more of an episode than furthering the series along.
I'm hooked on series so will be reading the next (not yet published) entry. The ending of this book foreshadows more drama with Lizzie potentially leaving the well spring to testify in court -- which may or may not be possible. Also once more hints -- not falling for that again -- that Aidan will be marrying a werewolf instead of Lizzie.

Review: It's been a LONG time since I last read a Night Huntress book. It didn't take long to remember that Ian was a rake in the vampire world, but I didn't remember much about Veritas/Ariel. The two make a great couple and I loved that her power was greater than his (she's 4000 years old after all). It was fun to see Cat, Bones, Spade and others from previous books. There's also an adorable demon dog. :-) I won't mind returning back to this series later.

I love Jane..she's strong, tough, sexy & she's Cherokee. 2nd book in the series pretty much takes off right where the 1st book ended so im curious if the 3rd book will do the same. Jane is still working for Leo -the head vampire in New Orleans but he is rather scary & strange and when someone breaks in & takes Molly's children (they are Witch Children) all hell breaks loose. There is a lot going on in this book & it takes a great deal of time to decipher and to finally figure out what the lay of land so to speak is. I love the way the author incorporates the Cherokee legends, myths & language into the story but it sometimes gets lost in the text. But in the end, it all ties together. I hope to read book #3 soon

Review Navajo born and adopted when she was a baby, Maya is a teenager living in a town on an island of just a couple hundred people. The town is owned by a corporation which runs a (supposedly) drug lab. Her best friend dies under mysterious circumstances, and a strange boy named Rafe moves into town with his sister. Maya learns that her pawprint tattoo marks her as a skinwalker who eventually will shift into some sort of big cat. I liked the creepy atmosphere of this book. It was fast paced and has an interesting enough mystery that I want to see what happens next.

This is a first time read for this series and author, so I did not really know what to expect. Meet October Daye, she's a changling, half Fae & half human. She was a PI in San Francisco until a case that she was working went horribly wrong and she ends up disappearing for 14 years. After she gets back among the living so to speak she learns that someone very close to her has been murdered and as a favor to this person's last request she sets out to find out who committed the murder & why. There were some really tough and really heartbreaking moments in this book - but there were also some good laughs as well. I really enjoyed the book and I hope to get a hold of book #2 soon.

The Dragon Who Loved Me by G.A. Aiken
Finished: March 9, 2022
Series: Dragon Kin, #5
Rating: ★★★★½
Number of pages: 400
Review: This so far is my favorite of the series. All of them have a lot of snark and a touch of fated mate redeemed by all the characters being feisty. The storytelling in this one was more serious because everyone's been involved in a serious war for more than five years and it takes place on the frontline.
Rhona the Fearless is a badass warrior who has also been stuck raising younger siblings so has a big heart she hides. Family pressure says to be a soldier and a commander. She has the soldier part down and a fierce reputation but no real interest in it nor in advancing to command. Vigholf is a clueless suitor but clearly loves her.
“She’s going to kill you while you sleep,” one of her sisters—Edana, maybe?—warned once Rhona was out of earshot. “Daddy made her that spear.” “We’re relatively sure she slept with it,” another said. “And you went and broke it. While getting between her and a kill and taunting her.” Another observed. “It’s like you wish for an early death.” “I was really trying to help. You lot shouldn’t be—” “If you say as females we shouldn’t be out here—” “—we’ll cut off your legs while you sleep—”Plenty of reuniting with characters from the earlier books and a good ending.
“Hello, lads,” the woman said. “Name’s Annwyl.” Then she smiled, and the lieutenant knew he’d not live to see the end of this day.

Series: The Others #8, The World of the Others #3
Rating: ★★★★★
Number of pages: 447
Review: The Others books are some of the most engrossing I've ever read -- and the absolute hardest to explain or review. This one was no different although I was disappointed how long it took to come out and how soon over. It was grand to see more of Vicki DiVine, The Reader, even though there was very few glimpses of the characters from original series.
“And they’ll be very unhappy with the rest of you humans if bits of bloody meat end up on their nice books.”To no one's surprise, there are human elements that still don't seem to get how powerful the Others are and how vulnerable. Vicki, like Meg, just seems to gain more and more connections to the more powerful of the Others. Which doesn't stop the morons from going after her. Ending wrapped up things well enough, but clearly this series has more to tell.
I [Vicki] just hoped, whatever had happened outside, no bits of dead human had gotten on the nice new books.I like that Vicki finds her footing without going all uncharacteristically badass. She's strong but doesn't have to be tough.

I may change my mind if I see someone pick something better. Not a lot on first few dozens of pages of shelf that appealed; most seemed straight up romance, YA cheesy or I already read.
The Soulmate Equation seemed like will be rom-com type of read. I liked the preview.

Review: It's been a long time since I read a straight up romance much less a standalone novel. Enjoyable, quick read, pretty typical rom-com that tried somewhat successfully to add in some science. I liked the characters even if overall the romance seemed a bit too quick and too easy (who trusts a man with their child a couple of dates in?). Extra points for avoiding some of the tropes that can sour me on the genre (tropes like not talking about an issue, love triangles, abuse for most of the book then *poof* in love at end...).

Review: I read the first Dark Hunter book in 2011 and didn't feel compelled to return to the series. After 11 years and reading friends' reviews of the other books, I thought why not give it another go. I am glad I did! Tabitha is strong, smart, funny and slays Daimons . Valerius is a former Roman general, now a vampire. He has never had any friends, so he's touched when Tabitha is kind to him. The book has gods, goddesses, vampires, daimons and a sometimes confusing cast of characters, but I enjoyed the story very much. I especially enjoyed the New Orleans setting. I would like to read more of this series soon.

Ok - let me just say...holy wow batman!!!! I had another book picked for this shelf but my friend talked me into this book when i told her it was on the shelf for this bingo call....and boy am I glad. I love Poppy but oh my...how much heartbreak can one person withstand before they break. I kept turning pages to get to the next chapter because honestly I wanted to know what happened next...i loved the fight scenes and the love scenes were beyond imagination...but im not happy with some of the "ideas" planted in this book...abuse etc but Poppy takes care of herself and so that made me smile. I honestly did not see the last line of this book coming but my next nook purchase will book #2 in this series.
I love the characters...those still living & those that are not of this world any longer.....

Review: 17-year-old Hadley is flying to London to witness her father marry. She is still pissed off that he left her mom. She meets Oliver at the airport, and they end up sitting together on the plane. They part at Heathrow, but ending up meeting again later. This is a fast read and something I may have liked when I was a teen. As an adult though, just a bit too sappy. Also, as mom to a 17-year-old girl, I can't imagine sending her on a flight to London on her own!

I was getting annoyed at the number of errors goodreads gave me trying the usual methods to check if on bookshelf, then every time I blinked it threw me back into the hard-to-see-book-description beta version I just left. I'm just not the person wanting goodreads book pages to be tumblr style images of bookcovers.
