This is a favorite of mine, I’ve read it a couple of times, I have a used paperback The Foundling
, and since I wasn’t quick enough to grab the Audible, narrated by my fave Heyer narrator, Phyllida Nash, I bought the CD collection to savor!
My copy is another of the Harlequin editions with the silly covers. This one has you looking through what seems to be a carriage window, except that it has an Irish lace curtain, at a palatial home in the neoclassical style, in front of which a tubby fellow is trying hard to stay on a bucking horse. Huh?Here it is:
On this read it strikes me how well GH sets things up. You learn a lot about Gilly & his uncle's character in the first few pages.
Yes, you really feel for Gilly - everyone loves him and cares for him, but they are smothering him! Really feeling that in this read.
This will be my third read, and I will start tonight. I have the Sourcebooks paperback for this read.
This will be my first read and I am excited. I am on the waiting list for a copy from the library; next person so it shouldn't be long to wait.
I have read this one many times and always enjoy it. I'm reading on my kindle this time and this is the cover
Abigail, that man on a bucking horse is certainly odd.
This is a second time read/listen for me. It wasn't a favorite GH book, but I really enjoyed Phyllida Nash as a narrator. This time I am listening to the Peter Noble version from audible.co.uk
It's my first time to read it and I have the same Harlequin cover as Abigail. I got my paperback from the library. I will start it in a day or two. So busy lately. We're in that snowstorm in the Midwest so you'd think I'd have plenty of time to read. LOL

I really envy anyone for whom this is a first read. I'm not too far along but I think I'd better post in the spoiler thread.
Jackie wrote, “that man on a bucking horse is certainly odd.”Yes, I keep wondering about who is the plump character with bad horsemanship skills!

I’m tossing up between Kindle and Audible - would you recommend Peter Noble’s narration Heidi? Has anyone else listened to his version?
I can’t help you with the audiobook selection, Julie, but I haven’t started yet either and have about 400 pages of other reading to do before I can!

This time I am listening to the audible audiobook narrated by Peter Noble due to the print copy I have being just too small for my eyes this time. I'm just two chapters in and so far enjoying the narration.

I love this book, and it’s one of my faves.
I think I read it back in the 70’s, but didn’t quite care for it then, and I don’t even think I read it in its entirety at that point.
Now, it’s my Heyer top five. Just love it!

I bought the audiobook CD of Nash’s narration.
Don’t pressure yourself, start when you can, and enjoy!
Thanks Abigail, Lesley and Susan. :) I’ll give the audio a try. It’s a pity the Nash ones seem generally unavailable now, everyone speaks so highly of them. Hadn’t thought of a CD option!
Oh my goodness… Gilly is such a sweetheart!! What a lovely character. I’m nearly halfway. There seems to be a lot more description in this one. I loved all the details of the stagecoach journey, and Gilly’s preparations for going away.

Apologies for not responding sooner, Julie. The Noble narration is thoroughly enjoyable and, I wholeheartedly agree Gilly is a sweetheart. It is a nice change of pace to hear the story told in male voices since the story is written from Gilly's perspective.

No problem Heidi! I’ve just finished, and I enjoyed the narration too. I was impressed, Noble does a great job with all the voices.

That’s a good point, a male narrator would be interesting! I hope all of these Heyer narrations on Audible will become available again, I don’t know why they have disappeared from Amazon US.

Oh, now I really hope this one becomes available here! Definitely worth an Audible credit…;) I’m trying to build up my Heyer audiobook library. The Reading the Detectives group has an upcoming read of Behold, Here's Poison, and the Audible was not available! I have the paperback and enjoyed my reread, but I find the audiobooks of Heyer’s books so entertaining, I hope they aren’t being phased out for some reason.

What format are people using?
Is this a first read for anyone? If not, how many times have you read this title?
Since this wasn't a favourite of mine in my young years (although I love it now) I have probably only read it a mere 40 times! Previously I have used my old Pan, but this time I am reading an Arrow.
This is the NON spoiler thread, so please no open spoilers, but using spoiler tags is fine! We don't want to spoil a first read for anyone!
