Victoria (nemerith) | 1200 comments Oh, I actually read this one (which isn't a surprise cause vamps and romance are 2 things I like lol), still only gave it 3* and think I was being generous. That said, I also have the second instalment as well, but don't know if I'll ever get to that.

Week 7 - Swoon Worthy

Imperfect Chemistry (Imperfect, #1) by Mary Frame

Imperfect Chemistry by Mary Frame
Pages: 266

How it fits: Tagged 1 time swoon worthy

Rating: 4 stars
Review: This is #1 in the imperfect series. I was really surprised with this story. It was hilarious and sweet. Good writing, solid story and characters. Lucy is a genius, brainiac who started uni at 13. Raised in a family with 4 brothers who are all pranksters and extroverts. Lucy is an introvert and prefers to be on her own, she reminds me of Sheldon Cooper. She lives next door to Jensen who is a pre law student and comes from a very rich family. He is pursuing a career that he doesnt want. He wants to be an artist. Lucy has always been driven on her education and hasnt made time to have relationships or be in social situations.

Week Seven
Shelf: Swoon-Worthy
Book: Captured (The Captive, #1) by Erica Stevens Captured by Erica Stevens
How it Fits: Marked 1 time as swoon-worthy (possibly 3, I'm not going back to look, sorry, you can't make me :D )
Read: 3/22/22

Rating: 1 star
Review: It's not a fair rating, this is pretty much everything I hate in a novel, jammed into one. Arianna is a human rebel, captured by the vampire ruling class. She is enslaved by some vampire prince with a stupid name I can't remember and of course he is "disabled" which makes him ethereally beautiful to humans. And there is just something that makes them fall in love instantly with each other. Blah blah, misunderstandings, jealous rivals interfering, etc etc and scene. There is of course a cliffhanger, but guess what, didn't work, I'm not reading on.

Sandra | 25908 comments Good to know Allison, I'll continue to skip this one :D

Thank you for being the guinea pig.

message 157: by Allison Ann (new)

Allison Ann | 414 comments I should mention that it wasn't poorly written or edited, there were no obvious grammar or spelling errors and the author didn't repeat a particular phrase or word ad nauseum, so I have definitely read worse.

message 158: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments But it sounds like an angst filled YA book, that's enough for me to skip it :)

Week 5 - Shifter(s)

Book: Wolf Shunned by Laurel Night
Pages: 248
Read: 20/03/2022
Rating: 4*
Review:

I read the sample chapters, and I immediately had to check if this was an approved read for BSB :D it was, yay!

Worldbuilding:
This was interesting, as we didn't really learn much about the world until relatively late in the book. That said, we got enough information as we moved through the story, so it wasn't detrimental. The story is set in a dystopian world, that far into the future that we're called Ancients. Scenes and environments were clear enough for relaxing and enjoying the story.

Character development:
A kickass heroine, Kaliya's no wallflower, nope, she dual wields awesome lightning swords, a warrior. The problem is, though, she needs to be mated by the time she is 20 or she gets kicked out of the clan and has to survive on her own, only there aren't any wolves more dominant than hers...
I really liked how the characters were written; my heart went out to Emory. They felt real and believable (yes, even Stig!). I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone better.

Pacing and flow:
This was good; some parts felt a tad slow, but overall, pretty smooth sailing with a good balance between all the fighting and conversations.

The book:
The book was well written with no (noticeable) errors. There is no sex described (if that is important to you).
It has 248 pages, spread over 44 chapters and is told from multiple points of view (though primarily from Kaliya's).
This is a very slow burn reverse harem (the author actually stipulates this at the start, so you know what you're getting into).

Final thoughts:
I was pleasantly surprised by this instalment :) When you have alpha males, you mostly have a less than alpha woman, but in this book... yeah, she kicks ass and takes names! I will read the second book in the series for sure... sometime :D

Week 7 - Swoon Worthy

Book: Dark Harmony by Laura Thalassa
Pages: 436
Read: 23/03/2022
Rating: 5*
Review:

The last book of the series, I have put off reading this one for so long, but it was time.

Worldbuilding:
Even though it was quite a while since I read the previous instalment, I got back into the story pretty quickly. We moved around a lot, but it felt easy to follow along. Such clear and detailed storytelling, I love it!

Character development:
Callie is no longer human after drinking the lilac wine, and while she and Des are fully exploring this development (and I mean fully :D), the Thief of Souls is always at the back of their minds, now together with Des's father.
This instalment really went all the way, be prepared for some serious feels. Callie and Des find out just how far their love goes and what they would do and sacrifice for each other.
As always, the characters are so well written. It's like they're old friends who are standing next to you. Oh, and Temper and Malaki? I hope we get a spinoff with them!

Pacing and flow:
Full of action, from start to end! Though there was more than enough time for all the conversations, tying up all the loose ends (though I really wouldn't mind a spinoff or so :D)

The book:
The book was well written with no (noticeable) errors. There is a lot of sex described (if that is important to you).
It has 436 pages, spread over 46 chapters and is told from Callie's point of view.

Final thoughts:
The feels, all the feels!!! But it was a worthy end of the series. I loved this series from start to finish and highly recommend it.

I'll be reading Undead and Unemployed by MaryJanice Davidson - 272 pages. Some people marked it as paranormal-romance, but I don't remember how many. I didn't love the first book and I don't remember why, but I'll give the series another chance.

Review: This was a good story. I am surprised at how I got sucked into the story. I liked that there were many references and a road trip to Canada. Also Tim Hortons Timbits. So much wit and snark. I really enjoyed the lol moments. Return of Seth and the relationship is so angsty and then another love interest appears. What is really enjoyable is the cast of characters and all the antics that happen.

Week 8 - Kindle Freebie

Book: To Kill A Warlock by H.P. Mallory
Pages: 210
Read: 07/04/2022
Rating: 2.5*
Review:

Worldbuilding:
I liked the world the author described: present-day, an urban fantasy setting and vampires called Bram, shifters, fairies and... well, pretty much everything fantasy, what's not to like?! We've only just scratched the surface, though, as I'm sure we will be going to the Netherworld in the following books.
Scenes and environments were always clear and well detailed.

Character development:
Dulcie, our heroine, is a fairy and a Regulator (think police for supernaturals). When she's the last person seen with a murder victim, all hell breaks loose, and she's on the hunt for the murderer. She loves to write, is self-conscience about her ears, and, to be very honest, is pretty rude to people she then uses for her own purpose. I couldn't like her enough... the way she treated people was downright not okay. And while some of you may be scratching their heads and not recalling any of this behaviour, just reread it and see how she treats Trey or Bram, for example.
So yeah, Dulcie was a no for me...
Then we have Knight, trying to be mysterious and just ending up confusing. I think this can be said for all the characters. The more I think of it, the more I'm like, never mind.

Pacing and flow:
It was a smooth reading experience, not too much at once, nor did I get bored. There was a good balance between action and conversation.

The book:
The book was well written with no (noticeable) errors. It was clean, with no sex described (if that is important to you).
It has 210 pages, spread over 22 chapters and told from Dulcie's point of view.

Final thoughts:
I've had this book on my list for a while now (2017, lol), but I never got to it. Now that I've read book 1, to be honest, I'm pretty sure I won't be reading the rest of the series. It was superficial, the characters didn't feel right, and I just couldn't get into it.

Week 9 - Paranormal Romance

Book: Blaze by Suzanne Wright
Pages: 368
Read: 05/04/2022
Rating: 4*
Review:

Worldbuilding:
We jump straight back into the story only a little time after the events from book 1. I didn't reread the last chapter of that book, so it took me a while to get back into it. Harper is the co-Prime of a large lair; women can't believe Knox is taken, and then we have a demon going rogue and spreading a very interesting prophecy. I mean... bring it on! :D

Character development:
This is an instalment where you see both Harper and Knox having difficulties relying on each other instead of only themselves. Their past did a number on them, which can really be felt.
Both grow a lot throughout this book, and I can't wait to see where they end up!
All characters are well fleshed out, with a mind and agenda of their own (no ladies, Knox is truly taken, get your greedy paws off him!).

Pacing and flow:
Smooth sailing from start to finish, with many things going on, but enough downtime to catch your breath (and think about getting a tattoo, lol).

The book:
The book was well written with no (noticeable) errors. It has a lot of sex described (if that is important to you). I would give it a steam level of 4 🌶️ (out of 5).
It has 368 pages, spread over 23 chapters and is pretty much always told from Harper's point of view.

Final thoughts:
I forgot how much I liked the first book... why did I wait so long to start the second instalment?
Ah well, I thoroughly enjoyed it at least, and the rest of the series is now pretty high up in my TBR pile :D If you like a paranormal romance where there is plenty of heat but also has great characters, check this one out!
