I read this when I was a young teen and it scared the pants off me. I'm pretty sure it was part of a series but it's this one book that stuck with me. Maybe early 90's or late 80's? The boy protagonist was very shy and awkward and his only friend was an elderly man. Maybe there was a museum involved? The bad guy/ghost thing had webbing over his face and wore a trench coat.
I think the cover was dark and had a sketch of a tree and the spiderweb guy on it. I'd love to find this again. Thanks!
