The Necromancer's Reckoning by S.J. Himes
Series: The Beacon Hill Sorcerer #3
Shelf #3: Favorite Couples (shelved by 4 people)
Read: 18 Feb
Rating: ✮✮✮✮☆
My Review:
The Necromancer's Reckoning starts off with Isaac struggling yet open to help from his brother. Almost immediately after getting his brother settled, Angel receives a letter from the High Council of Sorcery. It seems, after decades of inaction, the Council thinks it can flex their muscle and make demands; Angel's having none of it. He knows there have been many changes in his life recently that are most likely the reason(s) behind the Council's attention. Instead he focuses his efforts on solving the case of a missing ghost. The Council's persistence forces Angel and his apprentice to take shelter in the bloodclan's headquarters where the Council has no authority.
Sometimes justice had to yield to vengeance. Vengeance was faster, far more certain, and final.Vengeance is had, but good! This was my favorite installment yet. It was full of back story, touching moments between blood family and those you make your family, magic battles, a wendigo, a lich and a frickin' adorable dragon taking a bubble bath with expensive shampoo.
I'd thought this installment would shine more light on Isaac and Constantine, but that's still to come. And now we've had a meet cute between Daniel and a very old fae. Love is in the air 💕

On the mega screen bloody murder played out in classic black and white for an audience of one hundred and seven.
The murder of an actress/waitress during the showing of Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho has Eve investigating a serial killer using a popular book series as a roadmap.
This is an excellent addition to the series. The parallels of fan/fanatics with authors and their characters are probably a part of NR/JDR's life. I'm sure that she also has someone to screen manuscripts that are sent to her by "devoted" fans.
The work that it took to try to stay ahead of the killer was well paced and intense. I wanted to shake potential victims that didn't listen to Eve's warnings.
I love how Peabody reacts when she and Eve go to the fabric store to follow up on a lead. The visit sparks so much interest in Peabody's heart. A couple of my favorite lines come from Peabody while they are there.
He can be my yarn boyfriend. McNab will understand.
And after Eve demands that Peabody put the luscious yarn in the car.
I think I've had a couple of wool orgasms, but no coma.
As a huge fan of alpaca roving, wool and yarn, I can so relate.
Eve takes full advantage of Summerset being away on vacation and enjoys Roarke's company. As much as I enjoyed their, hmm, playful pursuits, I really like seeing them side by side in the library reading together with Galahad stretched across them.
This series never gets old. I know that once I catch up that I will go back a re-read certain books.
I highly recommend this series!

Just a lil side note y'all, b/c of RL stuff I might be scarce occasionally, but I'm still reading and will keep up with everything. Just may not be as chatty as I'd like b/c less online time.

We now have an updated BINGO card with a stamp on 'alternate reality'.

No cursing... just a quick rant when things don't go my way. GR is always good for that with some of the recent quirks and 'upgrades'. Anyway, once I shout about it, it's out and I'm over it.
I do keep see-sawing whether to read a book that is in my Feb queue but not PNR/UF or read an In Death that I wasn't planning... I'm sure if I go with In Death I'll find other challenges it works for so probably will be fine, just gotta pull that trigger I guess.

Since you’re in other challenges, maybe something that’ll fit more that BSB? But obviously up to you. Hope ya like whatever you choose.

We all certainly understand real life things. Heaven knows I do. Take care of your family and yourself. That is the most important thing.

What can I say? It's the same but different. It's exactly what I want/need in a long-standing series with characters I love. The murder story was a little predictable, there was no throwing us off or pushing suspicion elsewhere, though in the beginning I kind of thought it would be (view spoiler) . So this became about Eve doing what Eve does best with help from all our favorite sidekicks! Which is exactly what I needed this week :-)["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

First let me say that I read this completely out of order! I started with these 3 novellas (The Prince, The King, The Queen). I really liked those. The main characters are different than in the 3 main books. Now, this book was good - don't get me wrong - but maybe it's because I started in the middle basically, but this book wasn't as good as the novellas.
Tink is by far my favorite character and he isn't a "main" one. Ivy and Ren's story was a bit predictable and they are wound around some serious issues. I'll finish the main books, because I want to learn all of Ivy's story to see how she got to where she is in the novellas.

People are starting to wonder if I'm capable of training a successor.
Al MacBharrais is a Sigil Agent trying desperately to train a successor. Al discovers that his seventh apprentice (now deceased as his six predecessors) was involved in Fae smuggling.
I so wanted to love this book. I adore the Iron Druid series and was looking forward to starting this one. I switched back and forth between listening and reading to see if it made any difference.
I was hoping the crazed hobgoblin would make up for me missing Oberon. Not so much. I did enjoy the witty banter and obnoxious characters. I wanted Al to do more investigating on his own rather than depending upon other people.
I may revisit this series in the future, but for now it is not a priority.

Hate when that happens! I try to read books under 200 pgs or non-paranormal themed reads in between shelves 'cuz this'll inevitably happen to me too. LOL!

The Wicche Glass Tavern by Seana Kelly
Series: Sam Quinn #3
Shelf #4: Magic/Magic Users (shelved by 4 people)
Read: 25 Feb
Rating: ✮✮✮✮✮
My Review:
“Sometimes the only path forward is one of heartbreak.”The Wicche Glass Tavern begins with Sam reopening her bookstore and bar, The Slaughtered Lamb. A fun reunion of friends quickly reminds Sam that her crazy Aunt must be stopped before life can return to any semblance of normalcy.
⇰ Side note: Sam's reactions to Clive's "old friend" Liang cracked me up! ... Liang finally moved to our table and sat on Clive’s other side, her hand briefly on his arm as though encouraging him to calm. The presumption of laying hands on my mate made me want to tear off her arm and smack her across the face with it. 😆
I was suddenly struck by how much my life had changed, how full it had become when I wasn’t looking.Previously, Sam was, as Clive said "...in a different place, just trying to survive, occasionally peeking out of [her] hobbit hole before ducking back in ...", now she has allies, she's learned more about her family history and the power that comes with and she's more prepared to battle her Aunt. Now, she's on her way to meet someone who can teach her how to use her necromancer abilities. What she learns surprises her more than she could've imagined. Sam's abilities continue to grow, allowing her to assist her mate and his vampires in new ways. Her world and circle of friends continues to grow as well. It's a good thing because this time Sam and Clive must fight their battles on two fronts, working independently, as well as together when possible.
⇰ Side note 2: Clive getting a piggyback ride from Sam ... hil-ar-ious image! 🤣
I thoroughly enjoyed this installment. The relationship between Sam and Clive is fun to watch unfurl; Sam's abilities are wicked and continue to grow as she learns more about them; the side characters are always entertaining; and now, with a major storyline resolved, I'm anxious to see how things progress for Sam. I barely avoided reading the sneak peek into The Hob and Hound Pub because I want it all to be new when I get my greedy hands on it in April.

But Steph, you need to add your rating to Sam's latest adventure :D

I chose this book solely to fit a challenge on another group and was excited to see that it also fit this weeks shelf! Bonus - It is a great debut novel and one that I very much enjoyed. Assassins, gods, mythical creatures set in present day....what's not to like! Lol!
Asterion is owner of a club/fighting arena, a member of the Court of the Underworld and Hades nephew. His word is law and no one is brave enough to cross him....well, until now.
Ariadne is a top-notch assassin, but not by choice. She is driven by a revenge that keeps her in this world waiting and hoping for a chance to get both her freedom and revenge from the man/boss that holds her in his debt. She receives a mysterious phone call offering her the contract that will give her everything she has been wanting. All she has to do is kill Asterion....
Lots of action and snark by the main and supporting characters. Looking forward to continuing this series.

I didn't hate this but it's a cozy (paranormal) mystery, so I did feel like I had to endure it. The writing was a little banal - a lot of explaining (and re-explaining) the obvious. And the action was a little slow. The mystery wasn't entirely predictable so I admit that kept me reading and somewhat interested to the end. I doubt I'll keep reading the series unless I need it for a particular challenge. I loved the cover though, because purple!
