i read this book in elementary school, ~2003, in english in seattle wa. i have been looking for it since - i couldnt find it in my elementary school library again. it is NOT the dollhouse murders, but has some similarities.

it opens with a girl arriving at her grandmother (or other older female relative's) house. she is hopeful but bored. she quickly finds a replica of the house she now lives in in the attic - and tiny figures in it move at night. lights appear in the rooms and the figures tell her their story, over time.

she makes friends with a boy and they investigate what she sees up there, in the dollhouse. they research using microfiche and solve a death- but unlike in 'the dollhouse murders', this is the death of a young girl. the tiny figured showed how a girl once lived in the house, and her mother would lock her in the attic as punishment.

tragically, one time she locked her up in there and then got on a train, which crashed and killed the mother and father. the girl was trapped in the attic and died. the cemetary in town has three graves, but the girls was empty because, as they uncover at the end of the book, the girls body remained in the attic. they uncover the body, freeing the girls spirit, and the dollhouse stills itself - no longer lighting up at night and showing scene of parental neglect and abuse. potentially, at the end, everyone living involved forgets what happened.

(i also have memories of a story with a girl who is interested in fossils, who looks for them on a cliff and a man tries to harm her there, and i think she also researches using microfiche but i think this is a crosses memory from a different book. )
