I just finished the book, and I wasn’t super impressed? Usually I’m a huge Megan Miranda fan, but this one felt a little slow to me, and I couldn’t really connect with Harper or any of the neighbors.
I just finished the book today. It was well written and I tore through it, but I felt like it was fairly unbelievable. If your roommate just returned to your house after being in prison, uninvited, unannounced, wouldn't you question her relentlessly? It all felt unbelievable to me.

Harper was far too scared of her to question her about anything.
And everyone in the community avoided Ruby rather than have a direct confrontation with her. At the pool party Ruby accused Harper of having no backbone and when Harper lamely said that she took Ruby in, Ruby replies “Oh, like hell...you’re just too scared to tell me to go”
Well, it left me kinda scratching my head for sure. If my roommate was convicted of murder and went away for 14 months, I don't think I would welcome her back with open arms. Oh and just let her "borrow" my car for 2 days. I had to totally suspend disbelief on this one.
Did she ever find out if she said Thank you at the trial or F you? I wasn’t sure if I missed the answer or if it was unresolved
In my opinion, Harper was a spineless door mat who was used by her ex husband and used by Ruby, welcoming dominant personalities. How in the world she ended up the head of Admissions at a College is beyond belief. So we are led in circuitous routes only to discover that there wasn’t ever any murder in the first place! Oh goodness gracious!
I thought it kind of wandered around trying to build a story, but really the focus was just on everybody's gossipy attitudes towards Ruby and Harper and each other. Then it was time for the ending and it all got very convenient and weird - instant confession and "hands up" dialogue.
