Does anyone get withdrawal symptoms when they are forced to wait for a book in a series, or when a series ends?

When I really enjoy a series, it drived me nuts to wait 6 months to 5 years for the next book in the series! The really annoying part, is that once the next book is released I feel the need to "refresh" my memory about the previous book, so I have to re-read the entire series before beginning the new book, and the process starts all over again. :(

Mawgojzeta I keep a list in my purse of books I know or think will be a series. I won't start reading any of them until there is a minimum of three books out. That will take off some of the impatience I feel.

Of course, sometimes I read a book and find out at the end that it will be a series. I went through that with a few authors, the latest being Steve Cash with his books. The first one is The Meq which came out a while ago. I read the sequel when it finally came out. I was going crazy waiting for the final book so I finally emailed him (he is a member of the band "Ozark Mountain Daredevils") and the book is due out this next January. I will certainly have to re-read the first two.

Barbara (moochgoddess) | 92 comments Yes. Joy, you are absolutely right! Vampire Academy is tearing me apart right now. The Inheritance Series is taking so long in between books that I almost don't want to read the last one now. JEEEZ!

I had to make a shelf, just to keep track of series that I still need to finish. Otherwise, some of them take too long and I might forget about them. :(

Vampire Academy is the series I most want to finish. I started reading it right when it first came out. It'd be nice if occasionally authors released the series as a completed series so that the fans don't have to wait for the next one to come out. I think that there are supposed to be 8 or 9 books in the series. Thats a long wait, but at least she comes out with 2 books per year...

Lisa | 617 comments That's what happened with me with His Dark Materials Trilogy. I read the first two books, The Golden Compass and The Subtle Knife in sixth grade, and then the last one The Amber Spyglass didn't come out until I was in high school. By that point I had lost interest and would need to reread the first two before I read the last one. The only reason I ever did that was becaues the movie came out (huuuuuuuge disappointment) so I finally finished the triology. It was nice to finally finish it, but I thought the first book was the strongest and they kind of went downhill from there. Would still recommend it as an interesting fantasy read though.

Do you remember that series we read in junior high/high school called Fearless? They're still making the series and they are on #36 in the series. Plus they made a few "branch off" series. LOL I stopped reading the series after maybe the 10th one. It just stopped being interesting...

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish Joy,

I totally go through withdrawl when waiting for 'next in the series' books.

I can't NOT read, so I end up starting a new series if it's going to be awhile for the book I am waiting for. If the book is coming out like 'next week' then I will read a stand alone or 2.

I also have a WORD file with Book Coming Soon, Series Reading Order, Authors and Books to Look Into. I have those lists printed out and kept in my car so if I'm out and I can refer to them.

Hmmm... think I'm addicted to reading?

LOL I keep a shelf on here with my list of "buyers". That way I can print it when I go to the bookstore. :) So, I can def. relate. :)
Goodreads should have a theme..."Bookaholics" hehehe

UniquelyMoi ~ BlithelyBookish That would be a great group to start. If you do, invite me. LOL

Jackie M | 452 comments Yes I am always having a withdrawl! I have a few series that I am not so patiently waiting for Karen Chance's Cassie Palmer series, Karen Moning's Fever series, P.C. Cast/Kristin Cast's House of night series, and of course Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy series there are more, I could spend all day listing them!

message 11: by Elena (new)

Elena I am fairly new to reading series so I have had the chance of reading 3 or 4 of the books one after the other. But, I have found that by the time the next books for those are out I have lost interest in them, even for the ones I loved.

Barbara (moochgoddess) | 92 comments Joy- That's a great idea. A series in progress shelf is something I need to do right now. You are my savioress.

message 13: by Jaimie (new)

Jaimie (jaimie476) I definitely go through withdrawls. I did that with Harry Potter. I read the first four in a row and then had to go through the withdrawls for the last three.
Now, if I know it's part of a series I'll wait a while before starting it. If it's a trilogy, I wait until the last one is released.

message 14: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (shadowrose) I go through these too. Right now my current withdrawal that seems not to want to go away is Harry Potter. Seeing as I pretty much grew up with it and having something pertaining to it roughly every year, so now that the books are done and the movies are almost over I'm getting anxious.

Yeah I'm right there with you with the reading a new series while waiting. My only problem is I have about 12 series goin through my head at once and feel like Im in a overload, lol. I enjoy reading them its actually hard for me to just read a one story book,I thrive for more of the characters and more story. The waiting game thou does really suck!!!

Today I picked up Suzanne Brockmann's Body Guard, Heather Graham's Unhallowed Ground, and something by Julie Garwood. None are part of a series (so I am told) so I will have things to read between books. I was looking for some of the Nora Roberts books that were recommended, but couldn't find them. This trip.

I am getting the feeling that I am going to go through serious withdrawl when I finish the 7th book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series! I do not want to have to wait until May 2010 to get my Black Dagger Brotherhood fix! Ugh! I only have a few more books in the series until the withdrawl will set it, and I am NOT looking forward to it. :(

message 18: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) I haven't read book #7 of the BDB series for that reason Joy. I'm trying to make it last. lol.

I'm going through MAJOR series withdrawal after reading The Hunger Games and Catching Fire. I highly recommend these. Unfortunately, I think I may have to wait a full year for the next one considering that the second one just came out.

I usually try to wait until the full series is out or at least half of them are released but when I hear other people talking about a certain series... well curiousity gets the best of me.

Terri (terrilovescrows) | 188 comments I did with Jean Johnson's Sons of Destiny series
