Way to go Larry! I think Anna Karenina was my favourite book we have done in this group.

Larry Hall | 123 comments Read Murder on the Orient Express and Started War and Peace this month. so, it may be a while before I have another notch in my list.

Leona (mnleona) | 10 comments I finished Death on the Nile recently but I have never read Murder on the Orient Express

Larry Hall | 123 comments Finished War and Peace!!!! I posted some small thoughts on this huge novel in the original post. Generally liked it but was a bit surprised at how easily it is to follow. I think the over hype of how many characters and how long the story and the complexity of it is overdone. It was a well written and thought-out story with a talented author.
After the two Tolstoy's back-to-back I will take on something different for my next challenge pick. I was going to do Wuthering Heights next but as we are currently reading Villette I think maybe I'll pick something else. Not sure what yet I'll take a day or two before I decide.

Way to Go Larry! I think i like the Anna Karenina a bit more from a story point of view, but I really like how War and Peace was framed around real historical events of Napoleon's invasion of Russia; I never knew that much about the War of 1812 beforehand.

I was also thinking about reading Wuthering Heights next if I finish Villette a bit early.

Larry Hall | 123 comments Ok so next up for me is going to be East of Eden. I just finished Villette and need a Bronte break, I think. I will swing back to it later in the year.

I thought I would be done Villette by now; if I finish it in the next few days, I won't have time for Wuthering Heights. I feel the same, I would like a Bronte break as well.

Larry Hall | 123 comments Finally finished" East of Eden"! It was a fantastic read and Steinbeck is as great as advertised. This is my second by him and both were well worth the time.

I think I may read East of Eden next, if I finish Portrait of a Lady early.

message 12: by Larry (new)

Larry Hall | 123 comments Ya it's been tough so far this summer. My reading time (motivation) has been limited from all my other activities. I still need to read June's book so probably won't start another catch up book for a while.

Larry Hall | 123 comments Finished Wuthering Heights and it was one of the best reads of the year for me. After recently reading Vallette I thought I knew what I was in for but not at all. I know Ian and a few others have this on their list and I hope they enjoy the experience as much as I did. I will go back and find the original feed and leave a response when I have more time.

Larry Hall | 123 comments loved this book. It was a tense story told with a gothic theme. I found it dark and mysterious in every way. The story telling and writing were original, and I liked the story being told by an observer instead of one of the main people involved. I was not asked to take sides because most of the characters were not that likable. I didn't have to have traditional love story to be entertained by this Victorian delight.
Could not find an original discussion that I could post in so this I did here instead.

Larry Hall | 123 comments Just saw that Taming of the Shrew was on this backlist also and I just finished it for another group read so I took a bonus point for it. LOL! I have a love hate with Shakespear. I love the feeling of reading it at the same time feeling inadequate. Luckly, we have great resources and notes to help us through.

Remember, you can change which 10 books you are reading for the challenge, so you are allowed to for example take Hunchback of Notre Dame off the list and replace it with Taming of the Shrew.

Larry Hall | 123 comments Finished A Tale of Two Cities. This was my first Dickens I believe and although it took me a few chapters to get the rhythm, I totally enjoyed it. The story was well thought out and even had a twist or two near the end. Loved the characters and the way he builds their places in the story. Good old Miss Pross!

Larry Hall | 123 comments Finished Candide today. I liked it it was quite funny and made me laugh a lot. It reminded me so much of Don Quixote in its story telling and travel aspects. People sure died and then reappeared a lot in this story.

message 20: by Larry (new)

Larry Hall | 123 comments Down to 3 books I'm not sure I'll make it but i never thought I'd get this far so here goes nothing. Probably going for The Three Musketeer's next. I'm in the middle of 3 other books and am doing a reread of Fahrenheit 451 with my wife so we shall see.

message 21: by Morgan (new)

Morgan | 91 comments Larry, I also wanted to Read the Three Musketeers this year. The original movie is great. Happy reading!

message 22: by Larry (new)

Larry Hall | 123 comments Thanks Morgan. I always say I will watch the movie after I read the book and fully intend to and then never follow through. Especially with all these classics I have multiple choices. I think the last movie I watched after the book was Dune. I guess I'm just not a movie guy at heart. lol
Happy Reading to you also no matter what it is. It's all good.

I got a kick out of Candide as well. I think i laughed out loud at this quote when I first read it.

"As they were going to proceed to a third whipping, Candide, able to bear no more, begged as a favour that they would be so good as to shoot him."

Larry Hall | 123 comments Finished The Three Musketeers today 4 days into the new year. I had a reading slump over the holiday between work and family not much time so a little late for the challenge but so glad I read this book. So that gives me 9 if you include this late entry. Considering my year and all the other reading I did I feel pretty good about my catch-up year.

message 25: by Larry (new)

Larry Hall | 123 comments Here is a short detail on my reading experience for The Three Musketeer's.
What a fun experience. This being my first time reading this classic I was surprised at how the story went as I only had movies from my childhood to use as a reference. This story had a lot of layers and one of the best female villains I have read about. All in all, another classic that is a classic for a reason it can and should be enjoyed even now for readers looking for well written adventure.
