I read this book probably around 1996, though I think the book is quite a bit older than that, it was not a new book when I read it.
The book was, I believe told from the perspective of the robot who ends up becoming sentient. I remember a scene where he played chess with the captain of the spaceship. The robot may have gone rogue at one point in the story. I somehow remember the moon Ganymede playing a significant role. That's about it.
