Sci-fi: Temporal paradox story about an art historian from the 24th/25th century who travels back in time to meet his idol artist in Greenwich village, NY in the 20th century. The artist is an awful person. He makes friends with the artist and then the artist steals his time machine. He is stuck in the past and ends up painting the artist's masterpieces, effectively becoming the artist that he ends up studying in the future. Book is possible written between the 70s and now (2022).

"The Discovery of Morniel Mathaway", by William Tenn? It's in The Human Angle, Here Comes Civilization: The Complete Science Fiction of William Tenn, Volume 2, and Tales of Science Fiction: Featuring X Minus One. It was also adapted for radio.
