Jan | 20828 comments Here's the treasure that was found!

Treasure #23
Latitude: 52.37480431320022
Longitude: -1.5046733331920534

Coventry Cubes found at Baginton Mill Bridge on the River Stow
Coventry, England

Like most treasures, the story of these cubes found at the bottom of an old English river, is made up of at least three parts: the quest, the discovery, and how it came to be where it was found.

Let's begin with the quest. To stave off the boredom of the pandemic lockdown, Will Read and his two sons (age 7 & 5) began a new hobby called magnet fishing. These novice "mudlarkers", as magnet fishermen call themselves, set out daily with metal detectors to search for treasure. They had been at it for just two weeks, when on May 8th they found a mysterious treasure trove off Baginton Mill Bridge on the River Stow.

Now on to the discovery. First reeling in keys and pennies, our treasure hunters noticed what they thought were a pile of dumped tiles. Upon closer look, they discovered 64 of these lead cubes, each small enough to hold between your finger and thumb. The six sides of each cube were engraved with a 3X3 numerical grid, captioned by an inscription. But they had no clue as to what these mysterious cubes were used for. Luckily, Read was livestreaming this mudlark expedition on Facebook, and he posted the images on Reddit’s thread called "whatisthisthing". Receiving more than 600 comments, it was surmised that the cubes are connected to a mystical Hindu prayer ritual. The grid on each cube face was an Indian ankh-yantra, specifically the Rahu yantra written in Devanagari Script. The word yantra means instrument, apparatus or machine, and refers to a geometrical diagram used in the Tantric traditions of the Indian religions.

The next mystery was how these sacred cubes ended up in the River Stow. The most common hypothesis is that they were thrown in the river as a votive offering. In fact, several of the Reddit comments mentioned that such incantations for prayers take effect when they are thrown in running water. For the Hindu community in England, the Thames has become a substitute for the Ganges and it is actually quite common to find Hindu religious objects in its waters. In this case, the River Stow possibly became a substitute for that famous river. But what is certain is that this treasure is definitely a curiosity and a notable discovery for this family's treasure hunting history.
