I'm not sure what is sitting on my nightstand, but I'll find something and get back in the game after work.

I was into this about a third of the way when I posted it, and I finished it a few minutes ago, so you can mark it off.
Short read, brutally emotional. I need a nap.

Mouse and Cat Armor by Jeff de Boer
DeBoer Studio in Ramsay, Calgary, Alberta, CAN
Today's treasure isn't one from the past. In fact, these creative and imaginative pieces are being made today in a suburb of Calgary, Alberta in Canada. The artist is a metalworker by the name of Jeff De Boer, who has made everything from jewelry to large public sculptures. But he is best known for designing and crafting museum quality armor for cats and mice!! He estimates that he has created more than 500 pieces of animal armor since he crafted his first 36 years ago. The pieces range from rodent-size Crusader armor complete with tiny snout-nosed helmets and tail scales, to elaborate medieval Islamic chainmail large enough for your average house cat.
De Boer’s inspiration began with a visit to the armor collection at Calgary’s Glenbow Museum when he was five years old. From that day forward, he has been fascinated with armor and made his first human-size suit of armor in high school in his father's metal shop. But as a jewelry major in art school, he wanted to combine the small scale of the items he was creating with his passion for armor. And as Disney said, "it all started with a mouse". His collection grew and soon he was receiving commissions by collectors and patrons all over the world who share his deep interest in history and art.
Once de Boer determines the culture and time frame for an armor project, he conducts extensive research on armament styles of the time. Each tiny piece is preceded by reference drawings and clay models that help him draft exact patterns for the 30-200 separate metal elements that the armor may require. Most are crafted from nickel, steel, and/or brass and sometimes gold or platinum are used for flourishes like whiskers or tassels. Jeff likes to emphasis that the armor is not destined to be worn by animals but instead aims to spark people's imaginations with its fanciful mix of artistry, culture and military history. In fact, he shares that he once tried putting the shields on his cat and still has the scars.
Just as he was inspired by that first visit to the Glenbow, marveling at the ancient metal work of their armor collection, de Boer hopes his work will inspire future generations of artists. But he does wonder how people will react, and the questions that will be raised centuries from now, when his cat and mouse armor are discovered in a museum or an excavation of a 21st-century residence. I can take one of the Latitude 0s: Murder at the Vicarage, originally published in 1930.
