♞ Pat Gent Finished ~ Latitude 5,

The Girl from Widow Hills by Megan Miranda The Girl from Widow Hills by Megan Miranda
Completed ~ 10.29.22
Pages ~ 325

I'd have been done sooner, but I spent all day today judging a horse show, so I lost a big chunk of reading time.

♞ Pat Gent My next book ~ Trace ~ fits Longitude 4, so I'll pick up that one.

Starting that book now, but it's long, so it'll be a few days. :-)

And Pat - there isn't really a giant rush on these.

Karen | 621 comments I finished Latitude 5 with The Grey King by Susan Cooper, first published in 1975.

Good book. Read it for the Newbery credit but should read the whole series to better understand it I guess.

message 956: by Karen (new)

Karen | 621 comments Is there a page limit on this challenge, Jan? I'm about to read a quick kid's book about the Booth Brothers - as in John Wilkes and his brother, Edwin - a book that crossed the library circ desk the other day and looked interesting. It's published in 2018 so I could take a Latitude 8, but it is only 112 pages. Let me know.

message 957: by Karen (new)

Karen | 621 comments Never mind... The copyright page says 2018 by Capstone Press but GR says 2017. Sorry.

message 958: by Jan, Moderator (new)

Jan | 20828 comments No worries Karen!! But for the future, anything over 100 Pages works.

message 959: by Barb (new)

Barb | 1628 comments Finished longitude 4, and am glad the series has at least one more book. It's Baldacci, and he doesn't do long series, so it's likely to end soon(ish)

It's taking me a while -- real life is seriously in the way -- but so far it's been pretty good. My desk is clear today, so I may get some Kindle desk time in today. I work at Metro Library for OKC, so reading is part of my job (as long as the rest of my tasks are done!)

I love all her books! And in re-reading some of them I find that they really stand the test of time. I'm listening to this one for our Arthur challenge. I loved it when I read it when it was originally published and it's still as magical as it was 50 years ago.

Jan | 20828 comments Here is what our coordinates took us to!!

Treasure #18
Latitude: 48.8558832573
Longitude: 2.34596941054
Sainte-Chapelle (Holy Chapel)
Palais de Justice Complex, Paris France

This hidden treasure of Paris isn't just hidden in the figurative sense that many tourists don't know about it; it's also literally hidden, being encased inside the former French royal palace complex, that is now the Paris Palais de Justice. With the closure of nearby Notre Dame, this amazing gothic cathedral is definitely worth searching out. It has seen nearly a millennium of royal and religious history, and like Notre Dame, it features stunning stained glass windows, including an equally beautiful rose window.

Built between 1242 and 1248 by King Louis IX, the chapel was designed as a Reliquary to house the Christian relics acquired by the King from Constantinople in 1239, including the Crown of Thorns, one of the most important relics in medieval Christendom. But being both a symbol of religion and royalty, the cathedral became a prime target for vandalism during the French Revolution. At that time the relics were relocated, the spire was pulled down and many of the windows were broken, though nearly two-thirds of the glass you see today is original. The cathedral was restored to its former glory in the 19th century.

Getting inside Sainte-Chapelle is a bit of a treasure hunt in itself. You must first pass through the tight security at the Palais de Justice Complex (including metal detectors & x-rays), and then you need to find the unassuming entrance to the cathedral. This brings you to the lower chapel, originally built for royal staff, which now houses the gift shop. You then must ascend a tight stone spiral staircase to reach the "main" cathedral. As you might have guess, there is no handicap entrance available. Stepping out of the stairwell, the full beauty of Sainte-Chapelle lies in front of you. The walls are completely filled with the most incredible stained glass windows, containing over a thousand scenes that both tell stories from the Bible and the history of the holy relics for which the cathedral was built. The rose window is located on the west facade and it definitely rivals the beauty of Notre Dame's famous window. This treasure, with all it's gorgeous stained glass, is nothing short of luminous!
