Australian Kangaroo One Tonne Gold Coin
The Perth Mint, Perth, Australia

We have another record breaking treasure for you. Inspired by the enduring popularity of the annual Australian Kangaroo Gold Bullion Coin Series, this monumental coin was cast by the Perth Mint in 2011. Tipping the scale at a massive one tonne of 99.99% pure gold, it is the biggest, heaviest and most valuable gold bullion coin in the world, measuring in at approximately 80 cm (31.5 in) in diameter and 12 cm (5 in) thick. The successful casting of this coin is considered one of The Perth Mint’s most extraordinary accomplishments since its establishment in 1899.
The picture above shows each side of the coin, which features the Gold Bullion Series red kangaroo, along with the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the reverse side. I will admit that I chose this treasure because of this image of the Queen. It was soon after her passing that our next treasure was needed.
After touring Asia, Europe and the US, this mammoth coin is now on permanent display in The Perth Mint’s Gold Exhibition (our coordinate location). It has become a visitor highlight and must be seen in person to appreciate its size and worth. Issued as legal tender, the monetary denomination of this coin is 1 MILLION AU dollars. But it is said that if it were melted down and separated into gold bars, it would actually be worth over $54 million AU dollars.
Just a note about the coin series this treasure emulates. The Gold Kangaroo Series is now in its fourth decade of minting, and remains an integral part of Australian gold coinage. The coin’s notable lineage, annually changing kangaroo imagery, and limited minting have caused these gold coins to become highly collectible for numismatists and investors worldwide.
