There are spheres in this land where everything inside, human, beast building are frozen in time, and also the sphere is unbreakable I think. At some point, a sphere might pop, if I remember correctly. Everything inside continues from the day it was trapped. I can not remember if the sphere is man-made (to trap one's enemies or protect one's self) or some sort of magic or natural anomaly.

Further details might be bad memories.
I am not sure if they are brown or golden, but I remember there were other tiny spheres I think that were littered on the floor and could be cameras? I read this book as a teenager back in the 90s I believe so I have long forgotten about more details.
