The story presents two timelines, the present and World War II featuring Joe and Charles. Did you have any issues keeping up? Which storyline did you find most compelling?

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3474 comments I didn't have a problem keeping up with the two timelines. Brockman did a good job making both stories engaging. Honestly, I loved both storylines for different reasons. I thought it was interesting how the past (France) storyline ties into the present so well. They are both a group of people working on their own in dangerous situations.

My father rarely talked about his time in WWII. It was a war like no other. He did mention that they didn't have AC/heat in the tents like soldiers do today. Also, women played a bigger part than many people knew at the time. Their heroics didn't come to light until years after the war. I like reading about their bravery.

Robin (robinmy) | 2450 comments I had no problem keeping up with the two timelines. The author showed us very clearly when we were going "back in time".

This WWII storyline was good but not great for me. I wanted more action like when they were blowing up trains or running from the Germans. I really liked the current timeline with the hunt for the Merchant, Tom & Kelly's relationship, and the inclusion of Mallory and David.

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2953 comments I loved both timelines and all the subplots. I didn't remember the WWII plot as well and I did the current one, so that impressed me the most.

Joanne Farley I am not usually a fan of dual timelines but in this case it really worked. I had no problem keeping up and I felt that it added an extra layer of tension to the novel.

Brockmann did a great job in seamlessly presenting both timelines, revealing Joe’s and Charles’ natures as they explained their actions and behaviors in the present. Both interested me equally, which is unusual for me.
