30.2 Dlmrose's task: Initial Impressions

Book 1: Read a book written by a single author who uses at least 2 names (first and last name, first initial and last name or any other configuration). Spaces define separate names. Hyphenated names are counted as one name. All names count.

Book 2: Using the initials from the author of Book 1, read a book where the title (excluding subtitle) is comprised of words beginning with the letters of the author's initials- see the examples below. The beginning letters must be in the same order and frequency as the author's initials. All title word letters must appear in the initials. All words count including articles: "The" "A" etc.. Ampersands "&" should be treated as "A". Numbers should be treated as if written out- 3 = three = "T"; double digit numbers are hyphenated and treated as one word "33" = thirty-three = T. Roman numerals should be treated as numbers- VII = seven = "S".

Ex.
Book 1
The Cellist of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway
Steven Galloway =Initials S.G.
Book 2
Skin Game
Skin Game = title letters S.G.

Through a Howling Wilderness: Benedict Arnold's March to Quebec, 1775 by Thomas A. Desjardin
Thomas A. Desjardin = initials T.A.D
The Anarchist Detective:
The Anarchist Detective = title letters T.A.D.

Authors with more than 2 names may be used. All author names count toward the initials to be used in book 2.
The Goodreads record determines the name- so spaces, hyphens, etc are "as appears"

Sofi Oksanen for the first book, Sand Omnibus is OK in case the title changes

That's the way to do it. As long as the book by the author fits SRC rules any of those combos would work.

Victoria (RedsCat) (redscat) | 0 comments Can there be extra words in the title, as long as the required letters and order are there?
Ex. Ann Jones
Among THE Janeites.

No, sorry, All title word letters must appear in the initials. All words count including articles: "The" "A" etc..

Victoria (RedsCat) (redscat) | 0 comments Thanks! That's what I thought, but I wanted to be sure. (This is an awesome task, BTW!)

Thanks, it's fun if you like the hunt (and I do). If you're more easily frustrated try alliterative names and titles, like Ruth Rendell and Red Rising.

Victoria (RedsCat) (redscat) | 0 comments I love the hunt! Also, it's like putting together a puzzle. And all my books are in a spreadsheet, so it's a little easier :)

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3040 comments okay if I read something by Joanne Fluke, can I read a book called Just Like Fate? the letters J and F are in the same order but there is an extra letter in between.

No, sorry, the title would need to be a 2 word title starting with a J word then an F word. Think of the book title word starting letters as book initials- each word gets a letter, and the author initials and the book title initials must match

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3040 comments okay, I have an alternate, I just wanted to check.

Teri-K I have a question I don't see already answered here, but I apologize if I missed it - What about Roman numerals? If I wanted to read Henry V, for instance, would the initials be "HV" or "HF", since the V is actually a numeral that stands for "fifth"?

Thanks!

Roman numerals should be treated like numbers so V = five/fifth = F. I've updated the task, thanks!

Thanks. At least that rules one out... Believe it or not I had an author for the V!

But that's OK, there are plenty more waiting in the wings. :)

Julia (julia103) | 2719 comments If the author's name on Goodreads has a middle initial, does that need to be in the title of Book 2?

I read
Book 1: Lord Peter: A collection of all the Lord Peter Wimsey stories by Dorothy L. Sayers
Book 2: Dreaming Spies

but didn't realize until after I finished them that Dorothy Sayers had a middle initial.
(If it doesn't work I'll look for another way to slot them in.)
