What a genre-busting delight The Nancys is! NZ author R.W.R. McDonald's debut is a funny, amateur-sleuth mystery with bright, young Tippy Chan and her over-the-top gay uncle and his beau.
4★ My review of The Nancys
I recently read Take It Back, the first of Kia Abdullah's popular new mystery series. Interesting premise: In London, a white, disabled girl accuses 4 Muslim boys of rape. Her lawyer is a beautiful, smart Muslim woman. Dilemma?
My review of Take It Back

Alice wrote: "Peggyzbooksnmusic wrote: "Finished The Apothecary Rose # 1 Owen Archer historical mystery by Candace Robb. Rated 4 stars. Set in 14th century York, England. Realistic..."Thanks; Alice! Forgot to mention that the information in the Author's Note is very interesting. She is very knowledgeable about Medieval history.
I am reading The Paris Library
by Janet Skeslien Charles. The book starts in 1939 Paris, and jumps time period to 1983 Montano. very good storyline and characters. Can't wait to read some more tonight.

Wolf Girl is a shy little girl who pretends to be a brave, fierce wolf. The illustrations by author Jo Loring-Fisher are just beautiful.
3.5★ My review of Wolf Girl with some of the lovely artwork
125 pages into Kate Quinn's newest, The Diamond Eye, and I'm enjoying it! Just wish I had more time to devote to reading right now.
I loved The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes about a man whose memory is as fallible as everyone's. Wonderful story with an ending that has generated a lot of discussion since it won the Booker Prize in 2011.
5★ My review of The Sense of an Ending
I just started Bringing Down the Colonel: A Sex Scandal of the Gilded Age, and the "Powerless" Woman Who Took on Washington yesterday.
Just finished Robin Maxwell's 1997 novel The Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn. 4 stars. Nice addition to the myriad of novels about the infamous Anee Boleyn!
Chris wrote: "Just finished Robin Maxwell's 1997 novel The Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn. 4 stars. Nice addition to the myriad of novels about the infamous Anee Boleyn!"Chris; This is on my TBR list. I've read The Queen's Bastard by this author and liked her attention to historical details!
I'm reading Bringing Down the Colonel: A Sex Scandal of the Gilded Age, and the "Powerless" Woman Who Took on Washington.
I think The Strange Adventures of H, a young girl, by Sarah Burton could be an entertaining introduction to historical fiction about 17th century London. It covers the Plague, the Great Fire, and bawdy houses.
3★ My review of Strange Adventures of H
I am one of many fans of pre-teen sleuth and poisons expert Flavia de Luce, whose chemistry skills are legendary. The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag is the second in the series by Alan Bradley, and his depiction of 1950s rural England is a treat. Love it!
4.5~5★ My review of . . . the Hangman's Bag
Finished Monk's Hood #3 Chronicles of Cadfael historical mystery by Ellis Peters set in 12th century England and occasionally Wales. Rated 4 stars. Wonderful series!Link to my review:

The Flavia de Luce books are a wonderful series! The sisters are true savages, in a way that’s much more fun to read about than to experience.
I absolutely love Flavia!I just started Tears of Amber by Sofía Segovia and I like the gentle way the author is leading into the story, which promises to be anything but gentle.
Finished Plague Land #1 Somershill Manor historical mystery by S.D. Sykes. Set in 14th century England. Rated 3 stars. On the fence if I'll continue the series.Link to my short review:

Abigail wrote: "The Flavia de Luce books are a wonderful series! I know she's only about 11 so people may find her hard to believe, but there are young kids this bright. She is a such fun!
I enjoy the Amazon Original Stories, which are quick reads written by well-known authors and give readers a sample of their talent and style. Jeffery Deaver recently contributed Scheme, which has an unexpected (of course) twist at the end.
3★ My review of Scheme
We know him by his stage name Harry Houdini, which means MAGIC! This is another colourful introduction by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara to a little person who realised their Big Dreams. Excellent!
5★ My review of Houdini with several illustrations
I just wrapped Kate Quinn's newest, The Diamond Eye, last night. 4 stars! My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Semi-spoiler in review (to the extent that one can spoil a review of a cozy mystery....)Just finished a semi-cozy mystery set in 1923 London, featuring a feisty heroine who's an aspiring scientist and a man who has the good sense to recognize her intelligence and treat her with respect.

I'm about halfway through Anne Tyler's French Braid. So far I don't recommend it. To be blunt, it is boring. I've read Tyler before, and I realize that she writes about everyday family life to subtly make a larger point. But so far in this one, all I'm getting is the everydayness and it's a snooze.
I loved Douglas Stuart's latest book, Young Mungo, about a gentle teen-aged lad who discovers love in the bleakness of Glasgow's East End. The author knows from his own experience that there are roses among the thorns.
5★ My review of Young Mungo
Margaret wrote: "I’mJust starting Russka by Rutherfurd"
I keep meaning to try some Rutherfurd, Margaret. There are so many enthusiastic fans.
Really enjoyed that latest Brother Athelstan and Sir John Cranston mystery by the always-reliable Paul Doherty. Set in the 14th Century, The Hanging Tree
offers a complex plot and interesting characters from across the social spectrum. My **** review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I am reading one of my favorite historical mystery series, newest in series An Impossible Impostor
by Deanna Raybourn. Love the banter between Stoker and Veronica. This would a make a great TV Series.
HAPPY INTERNATIONAL NURSES DAY which is celebrated on May 12th, Florence Nightingale's birthday. Born 202 years ago, this most remarkable woman changed nursing around the world. The Lady of the Lamp is still a role model, and I hope this children's book will inspire more kids to go into into nursing.
5★ My review of Florence Nightingale with several illustrations
Finished A Rustle of Silk #1 Gabriel Taverner historical mystery by Alys Clare set in early 17th century England. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 stars. I think this series has a lot of potential. Plus I learned some "new to me" historical facts about this time period.
In Shoot to Thrill by P.J. Tracy, the FBI gives the Monkeewrench crew free rein to hack into anything anywhere to find out who is posting videos of murders in real time. What a challenge!
3.5~4★ My review of Shoot to Thrill
Finished Shadows and Strongholds #1 Fitzwarin by Elizabeth Chadwick one of my favorite historical fiction authors. Set in 12th century England. Rated 4 stars.
Just finished Notes on an Execution. 5 stars from me! Here's a link to my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Currently reading Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup by John Carreyrou, about Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos. Moving on to The Enchanted April by Elizabeth von Arnim in a couple of days.
The Key to Deceit is an absolutely delightful historical mystery set during WWII and involving an investigative collaboration between a British Intelligence officer and a safe-cracking niece-and-uncle team.My **** review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Aboriginal author Evelyn Araluen has just won the 2022 Stella Prize for Dropbear, her new collection of poems, essays, memoir, and thoughts. it's quite a mix, and I hope I've done it justice.
