Grant returns home from deployment, Hannah is traveling internationally for business and Max is on a wildlife research project. What were your first impressions about the Barrett family?

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) It seems that there are definitely issues, and possible things have happened in the past to cause estrangement or lack of closeness.

~Melissa~ | 429 comments Seems as if the siblings all went off to live their lives and Lee was left at home to 'carry on the family'. We do hear that Grant has come back to visit yearly for his vacation but you don't really get any feeling about the siblings (Hannah and Mac) time at home since the story is then told in Grant's voice.

Yes, before this horrible event they didn't seem particularly close, did they. A shame it took this to bring the remaining three together.

I think sometimes this happens a lot. The young adults always think there is time to 'come back home' later on once they've established themselves. Not realizing how much they really are missing. It's so easy to get caught up in going about your day to day grindstone for work and not look at the bigger picture.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) Yes this is true. My sister and I are much closer now in our later middle age than we were when younger. I was raising a family and she is a career woman. Doesn't matter so much now. Family is much more important.

Lynn (ftbooklover) Again, I agree with Lisa and Melissa. The family hasn't been close. The care of the father has been pretty much left to Lee. I think Grant even mentions that at the beginning of the story - Lee left to deal with all of the family "details."

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3484 comments I thought that the siblings, except Lee, all inherited the need for adventure from their father. They didn't seem that close on the surface, but I feel that Lee is the tether that pulls them all home. It's like Lee is holding a place for them.

I like your take on where their love of adventure came from.
