Welcome to the 2022 Read Through the Year Challenge!

This year's challenge runs from January 1 - December 11, 2022.

*Quick note for those who participated online last year*

All you have to do to participate this year is join the Goodreads challenge for 2022 and set your reading goal. Then keep reading and adding books to your shelf!

How does the program work?

You set your reading goal for the year, whether that’s 10 books or 100. If you reach your goal by the end of the program you will be entered to win the grand prize (goal must be at least 10 books). If your goal is to read less than 10 books or if you do not reach your goal, you can still use the points you earn towards the other prizes in the prize raffle.

For each book you read, you will earn 10 points and one entry into the raffle drawing for the runner up prizes.

You can read fiction and nonfiction for adults and teens as well as middle grade and juvenile chapter books (juvenile chapter books must be 200+pages but there is no minimum page limit for anything else). You can read or listen to books in any format (print, e-book, digital audiobook, book on CD).

You can earn extra points by participating in special challenges posted in this group.

How do I participate in Read Through the Year using Goodreads?

You will need to enter the Goodreads Challenge. It is easy to do. All you have to do is set how many books you want to read this year. Then as you complete a book and add it to Goodreads, be sure you set the date read so it will count as part of the challenge. From your main page in Goodreads you’ll be able to see your progress.

You will also need to make sure your profile is set so that Goodreads members can see it. That is how we will be able to verify your participation and completion of your reading goal.

How do I add a book I’ve read to my Goodreads shelf?

Look up the title of the book. Each book will have a green “Want to Read” button with a little drop down arrow. If you move your mouse over the arrow it will allow you to select “Read”, “Currently Reading”, or “Want to Read”. Select “Read”. This will bring up a popup that will allow you to rate the book, give it a review, add it to various book shelves, etc. Set the date that you read the book and then select “Save”. If you need to make changes or you reread a book already on your Goodreads shelf, just look up the book and select “edit” next to “My Activity”. This will allow you to add more dates read or a review, etc. You can also remove it from your list of books.

How do I protect my privacy on Goodreads?

You can go into your profile settings and remove your last name (or make it visible only to friends) or create a username. For example if John Smith didn’t want his name to show up on Goodreads, after signing up he could make his last name visible to just his friends or he could remove it altogether or even change his first name to “GuyWhoReadsALot” so that’s all people would see.

To change your profile settings, click on the button in the far right of the menu on the Goodreads page. Select “Profile”. At the top of your profile page (next to your name) click “Edit Profile”. Be sure to save your settings at the bottom of the edit page.

You can also change your settings (tab next to profile in your account). This will allow you to choose who can see your profile and who can contact you, etc. To participate in our reading challenge, your profile can’t be set to private but if you make the changes we mentioned above you can still protect your privacy by either keeping your last name visible to friends only or removing it altogether or using a username instead of your real name.

How do I keep my inbox from being overwhelmed with group emails?

You can choose in your account settings ( "emails" and "group email preferences") to receive a "digest" of discussion comments and posts. We recommend that you don't select "none". If you choose "notification only" you will only see messages and notifications within Goodreads but if you don't check it regularly, you may miss out on important notices.

Still need help?

If you need help with using Goodreads, check out their Help page or leave us a message in the group discussion or call the library at 330-674-5972.
