Bangalore bookworms and bibliophiles (BBB) discussion
Introduce yourself here! (Please please please)

I am Ardra, I am currently a graduate student living in Boston, and I was working in Bangalore previously.
I love the vibe of this group, it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy - as does reading. I love reading just about anything! Currently, I am reading mostly non-fiction, but I love fantasy fiction, romance, thrillers - what have you. I am game for anything that is reasonably well written, as long as I learn something from it or it strikes an emotional chord for me.

I'm Pratip, a Sales guy working in an IT Company. I moved to Bangalore recently but I was part of couple of Book Clubs when I was in Chennai (For almost a Decade) and looking forward to see what this group offers.
I'm an amateur reader and except Horror I read all the Genres. Recently, started listening to Audiobooks. I can understand Telugu and Malayalam but can't read. So, I'm simply seizing the opportunity to listen to the books written in these languages. I usually read 2 - 3 books at a time. 1 Tamil book, 1 English book and a Comic.
Looking forward to know many people here and see if we can have a meet-up sometime and discuss all things Books.
Happy Reading :)

This is Divya from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
glad to be a part of this reading community. Always wanted to be a part of an active reading group, thanks much for the invite. I started my reading journey when young back in the boarding school (books becomes a part of you when you get homesick). I love reading anything fiction.

I am Tarun, from Punjab, working as a software engineer for Oracle in Bangalore.
I'm the typical "collect 100, read 10" kind of bibliophile, basically I collect more than I read. The genres I love are literary-fiction, politics, history, economics, etc.
The books I loved the "most" so far are -
1. To Kill a Mockingbird - For the courage of Mr. Atticus Finch to live up to his conscience.
2. The God of Small Things - For the manner in which it is written, and for the innocence of the characters.
3. IIM Ahmedabad Day to Day Economics - For so lucidly, comprehensively, and concisely explaining the subtleties of this dismal science.
4. Sapiens - For telling the human history in a much interactive and exploratory way.
Looking forward to enriching discussions and awesome recommendations.
Happy Reading !!

I'm Bhuvan from Mysore.
I read non-fictions mostly. My reading speed is quite slow. So, if I can read 12 books in a year, I consider it a good year.
I'm currently reading,
1. Abhinav Bindra's 'A Shot at History'. It's been riveting so far.
2. John Truby's 'The Anatomy of a Story'
3. Vaclav Smil's 'Numbers Don't Lie'
I enjoy watching good movies.
I also write an irregular substack called 'MITIR' where I share the interesting things I've read & learnt over the years.
Cheers!

Rohan here, Architecture student and Tattoo artist from Bangalore.
I've been a consumer of English literature from my early years, since my mother introduced me to the language to keep me from struggling with it like she did when she had to switch from a kannada speaking school to an English one back during her high school years.
My core interests mostly all lie in the fiction genre, Fantasy, Dark fantasy, Sci-fi and mythology, since they all serve as great brain food for my art. When I do venture out of my reading comfort zone, its to psychology and philosophy, they're really interesting reads that help grow my understanding of myself and the people around me.
Being a visual artist, I also gravitate towards graphic novels, manga and manhwa content.
Currently going through the collection of Works by Edgar Allen Poe, and some of the underrated work by a mangaka of the name Q. Hayashida, her art style and integration of psychology and philosophical tropes in her work really appeals to me.
Looking forward to having my brain picked here and discover some new diamonds in the rough, Thank you for the invite :D

I am Shravanthi (MSc. Electronics Engineering) and am currently working as an Application and Software Engineer in Hamburg, Germany. I am a Bangalorean through and throug, born and brough up. But I have been stuying, working and living in Germany for nearly 4 years now. I would firstly like to thank Dr. Aditi for inviting me to this group, I really appreciate it.
I have been reading books since middle/high school and have not been able to hold back since. First it was comic books based on DC to Enid Blyton's mystery solving books for children. You could always find me sticking my nose in one book or the other. It became so annoying to my mother at one point that she had to literally hide away all my books so I studied actual course and school related books other than "wasting my time" (according to her) reading novels and books. Although she couldn't keep me away from books for long and also my parents were firm believers of gaining knowledge by reading and travelling. They only kept me away from books during exams and gave free rein and double the pocket money for books ;). They were good people.
Anyway, growing up I have reading books from almost all genres. I would still say that the "Harry Potter" series remain my all time favourite. I am true Gryffindor and believe my Patronus would have been a Phoenix, if i were in the HP world :P
In the recent years though, along with fantasy and fiction, I have also spread my wings in the romance genre of the books. And I would never say they are my guilty pleasure, because they are NOT. I love reading rom-coms, they are such a huge distraction from real life and sometimes mid-life crisis that I jump on the opportunity the first chance I get. I already know they will definitely have a HEA ending, but I still want to see their screw ups and the 80% break-up which is a must in any rom-com. Because as the saying goes, "this would is just not enough for me". I could live with my fictional characters for all of eternity and never once complain.
I also love mystery and thrillers (currently reading the "The Silent Patient" and I am in love with the story and the strong hold it has on me). But in all honesty, I have been into murder mystery and thrillers since the age of 14 or 15. The only genre that I find the least interesting is the non-fiction, biographies and auto-biographies. So yeah, I would stay away from reading more of reality in my books and rather enter a whole new world where I can be anyone for at least a little while.
So yeah, this is me. Going through one day at a time and carrying along at least one book with me at all times. Looking forward to meet more such booknerds (like me!! :D) and having wonderful discussions and friendly battle of fav characters, authors and books ;) Happy reading, enjoy and cheers!

My parents tried everything and finally my dad one day once I almost got into an accident because I tried to read while cycling took all the books and told me he would burn it.
I found out later that he hid them in our ancestral home. It was nice to be reminded of my childhood and I can relate to others who were obsessed with books as a kid.
I used to also love Harry Potter as a kid, like a lot of others in this group I bet. If you want to see that world through a different lens then I can highly recommend the fan fiction Hpmor.com

This Lipsa, a software engineer and will be moving to London in few months for my higher studies.
I started my reading journey when I was 12 years and my first ever novel was The Jungle Book. But my turning point was when I found Harry Potter and LoTR books in the school library.
I love reading Historical Fiction, Fantasy, middlegrade. My favourite authors are Haruki Murakami, Fredrik Backman, Matt Haig, Ruskin Bond. You will usually find me with a book and coffee any time of the day.
Recently I have been obsessing over Japanese literature.
Hope to discuss more about books, authors and characters.

I read a lot of fiction - Read everything by J.R.R. Tolkien (how awesome is the Silmarillion!), lots of Stephen King (ok he's not amazing, but he's not bad either), the classic YA (Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia, Percy Jackson stuff, and so on). I fell in love with Science Fiction around 2017-2018 and love going back in time and reading foundational stuff. I really got into Philip K. Dick's books (trippy, am I right?) and also am a moderator on various PKD forums. Neal Stephenson is really good, I am going to read more oh him in the coming year.
Last year I read a lot of existential books. This year, so far the theme has been Infinite Jest (OH MY GOD, such an amazing book!!) and lots of short mystery books (primarily Agatha Christie) because I've been involved with lots of intense academic projects, so reading books as a form of entertainment more than for self-discovery for the last few months.
I am always excited to talk about AI, Alignment, Superintelligence, connections between biology and AI, the information theory (and fanboying over Claude Shannon and Richard P. Feynman :p), cryptography, cybersecurity, fabrication, and just about anything if formulated properly :)

I travel a lot due to my work. I love reading and singing. I prefer both ebooks and paperback but I'm not okay with audio books.
Although I prefer reading all types of books but my favorite genres are horror and thriller.

I won't really call myself a bookworm, given how much I read and the effort it takes to read. Though it doesn't come naturally to me but when I read I do enjoy it. I do aim to author a book at some point in my life. ;)
I read both fiction and non-fiction. I have also committed to read more Hindi books. And I thoroughly enjoyed the last two I read.
I hope to learn about some good reads from this group and get a push to become a regular reader.

Thrilled to be in this book. I am a double masters, in commerce and English. I cant really survive without books. I don’t have a favourite genre. I read classics and fictions. Not so much into fantasy genre.
Looking forward to know more about books.

Hi Neharika, I am also committed to read more vernacular language books! In Hindi and Bengali. DO suggest some good hindi stuff to read. My knowledge is limited to only Premchand.

The Four Agreements and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective people are the ones that have biggest impact on my life. The first one freed me from some of my limiting beliefs which led me to freely communicate with others and the second one in time management, long term planning, etc. I was searching for solutions in my life's problems to which they helped significantly. I guess you might have heard it before, if you haven't read it do check the summary and reviews to see if this might interest you or help you in anyway.

Liking this city so far!! The culture and weather here... feels like Bengaluru vibes in a better way with booklovers (booklovers here be like: ‘Namma Ooru Bengaluru’ :D). I'm looking forward to good experiences here.

Hi Nagesh sir, are your books available in English or Hindi translations? I am a big detective novel/story fan and have read extensively classic as well as modern detective stuff in English, Hindi and Bengali! :-)

Thrillers are my go to genre as well!! What are your fav series/authors?

Welcome Aishwarya! Do join the whatsapp group as well... (Thats for everyone as well!!)

Will definitely try them out!! One suggestion from my end: Six Thinking hats!

This is Naveen. I am a software engineer. I am from Coimbatore(TamilNadu)...and will be moving to Bangalore soon for work.
I usually read all genres, depending on my mood :)
I am elated to be a part of this group dedicated to book lovers!

I am a firmware engineer and an aspiring author. Really happy to see this group here. I mostly write stories that have happy endings. I prefer to because I am a hopeless romantic in my head and obviously in my heart. Yes, I am a staunch believer that there was enough space on the door for Jack and Rose to stay afloat.
Cheers!

"Yes, I am a staunch believer that there was enough space on the door for Jack and Rose to stay afloat"- ROFL!!!

Nice to be part of this group !

Glad to be a part of this group of bibliophiles :)
I work as a copywriter and social media lead, but I live for reading. I'm a bibliophile; when I'm alone, I touch myshelf. :D
I'm genre agnostic and try all genres with usually a couple of books of contrasting genres together. Recently have become a fan of Frederick Backman's writing and have forayed into true crime and investigative journalism sub genres too. :)
Always up for puns, book recommendations, and dad jokes!

I am a currently in a bit of reading slack.
My favourite genre for past 2 years has been non-fiction mostly biographies and philosophy.
Hoping to get back to fiction and thinking to start with Brandon Sanderson or 1984, which one do you recommend to get out of reading slump?

For someone who's planning to step into the world of fiction, I'd recommend to start with really easy reads. If you're even slightly spiritual and would like to read beautiful stories with a tinge of philosophy, try Mitch Albom. The Five People You Meet in Heaven, The Stranger on the Boat and Tuesdays With Morrie and beautiful reads.
You could also try your hand on thrillers/ mystery because they're easy page turners. In that genre, I'd recommend The Chanakya's Chant by Ashwin Sanghi, if you're interested in the world of politics.
What made you want to switch from non-fiction to fiction?
Books mentioned in this topic
LET'S UNDERSTAND INDIA - What the World needs to know and we need to rediscover (other topics)Quartet (other topics)
Thank for inviting me to join this group! I love to learn about life from reading non-fiction and love to experience other worlds through fiction and fantasy. I currently work as a software engineer and live in the US. Good to e-meet you all :)
