Hands
is a moving short story from Sherwood Anderson's highly regarded collection, Winesburg, Ohio (1919). Wing Biddlebaum doesn't understand what is wrong with his hands, but it's obvious to the rest of us.
4★ My review of Hands with a link to where you can download the story
Elizabeth Strout's Lucy Barton returns in her new book, Lucy by the Sea, where ex-husband William takes her to Maine to escape the pandemic which has brought New York City to its knees. It's American, real and current, but the relationship strengths and strains go beyond geographical boundaries and times. Families are families. Neighbours are neighbours.
5★ My review of Lucy by the Sea
I read Death in a Darkening Mist by Iona Whishaw It is book 2 in a cozy mystery series set in 1946 rural British Columbia. I recommend reading this series in order. My 4 star review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I just finished the very disturbing The Family Remains
It didn’t quite work for me. My three star review:

So you don't want to read the sequel?
I'm reading The Perplexing Theft of the Jewel in the Crown by Vaseem Khan which is about the theft of the Queen's crown in India when there for an exhibit. Of course Chopra and his baby elephant and sidekick, Ganesha, are involved in trying to figure it out
About to finish 'The Last thing he told me" ... and I just can't get my mind around how it got goodreads award, how on earth?

I ask myself that question often about goodreads award winners. Everyone's taste is different.

I just finished The Lake of the Dead by Andre Bjerke (1942): a Norwegian horror/supernatural/mystery. Several years ago, I had watched the movie of the same name released in 1958, from Norway.
I have found it on Amazon Prime and am going to watch it again. I’m so excited.
The Old Contemptibles
by Martha GrimesRichard Jury #11 in which Jury investigates old and new tragedies in a family which has experienced too many. This is a very fine entry in the series, particularly notable for the introduction of a fascinating and hilarious elderly lady, Lady Cray. 4 stars.
If you're a legal thriller fan and/or a Robert Dugoni fan. look for his new book, which is due out next spring, (available now on NetGalley), Her Deadly Game

The Rising Tide
by Ann CleevesIn this 10th novel in the Vera Stanhope series, the intrepid sleuth investigates a suspicious death on Holy Island, a tourist destination off the west coast of Scotland.
Entertaining mystery. 3.5 stars

One should always pay attention to what the animals are doing. Jack London is well-known for his tales of the frozen north, and his short story, To Build a Fire, is colder and more desperate than most.
4★ My review of To Build a Fire
Pre-teen (ALMOST 13!) Ricky Bird is struggling with parents' split, sick little brother, and moving to a different estate in another part of London. Aussie author Diane Connell's The Improbable Life of Ricky Bird deals with many difficult subjects. I think it would be a good YA read.
3★ My review
How I could have missed C.S. Lewis's
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
in my childhood is beyond me. Surely someone should have directed me to it! It's still fun, of course. Better late, etc. 😊
5★ My review
On a completely different note,
No Country for Old Men
by Cormac McCarthy is only for seasoned readers. Simple, direct, and violent, but thought-provokingly tender in places. Phenomenal writer.
5★ My review
I listened to The Wedding Plot.
A nice, cozy mystery with dogs. My 3.5 star review:

I read Hard Time by Sara ParetskyIt is book 9 in the series, but worked for me as a stand alone. Warshawski tangles with some powerful people when she is accused of crimes that she didn't commit. My 4 star review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Finished Tourist Season by Carl Hiaasen. (1986). I believe this was the author's first. A lot of craziness ensues in Miami, sometimes too over the top. I think he tried to cram too much into this one, I was ready for it to be over with still nearly 100 pp to go.
Upgrade
by Blake CrouchLogan Ramsey is accidently genetically 'upgraded', and discovers a scheme to 'improve' the genome of every person in the world. He's opposed and takes steps.
Good sci-fi thriller. 3.5 stars

Die Around Sundown
by Mark PryorParis, 1940, is occupied by the Germans. A patriotic French Policeman, Inspector Henri Lefort, is tasked to solve a murder in 5 days or face death or torture by the Nazis. Well done historical mystery, good plotting and characterizations.

I just finished Jessica Payne's Make Me Disappear, an edge of my seat thriller with an unusual aspect to it. It well-deserved the 5*s I gave it. I'm planning to read her latest book now. Thank you to Val for the suggestion ... https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6...

Here is my review of American Mother: The True Story of a Troubled Family, Motherhood, and the Cyanide Murders That Shook the World by Gregg Olsen
It's strange, the book is well-written but I couldn't care less about this bunch of horrible people.

I believe that case prompted tamper-proof packaging to become a standard, at least here in the US. How horrible that innocent people were caught up in this crazy woman's plot!

It was the Tylenol murders in Chicago in 1982. Although this may have added to it.
