I'm almost half-way through and really struggling with the writing style. There are a lot of digressions and infodumps that get in the way of telling the story of the current events, and I find it very distracting.
That aside, I like finding out how the world is not-quite-ours.

Agreed. Find myself getting impatient with the all info dumps . I'm thinking just get on with it.
Keeps making me crave unhealthy but tempting food too.
This is so exciting! I read this book so many years ago and haven't really found anybody else who had read it before.

I felt exactly the same way! I loved the world that was built, but it was one of those instances where I wished a better writer had the idea. That feels mean to even type, but I have an internal list of books like that.
I remember getting this book on the strength of the author and then slowly noticing that really the title and the cover art push in very different directions. . . .
I will be wanting some cinnamon rolls or sticky buns, STAT.Maybe I will buy a bag of pecans and carry them around, for those times the places have cinnamon rolls, but without nuts or pecans.
About a quarter of the way through. I'm enjoying the way that the differences of Sunshine's world to our own is drip fed to the reader. On the negative side, I am finding the lack of chapters or natural breaks in the story annoying although I'm sufficiently intrigued to soldier on.
There ARE section breaks in the story in my copy, but no chapter headings. I think that's good enough for purposes of natural breaks.(Progress report: 2/3 of the way through, and still bothered by the inner voice and pacing)
So I've just started and I'm intrigued by the fact that I don't know the narrator's name even though she's rattled off the name and occupation of everyone else in town. Laughing at the line "Vampires kill people and suck their blood. Or rather the other way around."...and then she goes into a discussion of the relationship between vampires and cats and how they understand each other. Humor and horror? You have my attention! (Only 4% in on the ebook).
1/4 in. Not what I was expecting from the title and cover and my usual benign neglect approach to selecting my next book from the library stack. I like the idea of carrying around pecans in general, but what with everything else going on in the world, I moved directly to eggnog whiskey this evening. It’s almost out of season, right?
At 1/3 in I am struggling so hard like never before, and oh, God, I've read quiet a few pieces of literature I was really incompatible with before. With all the repetitions of mean cinnamon rolls and waking up at 4 A.M, I find myself constantly checking the cover to see if I got swindled and sold someone's daydreamy diary or what...
I started last night and I'm about 15% in so far. I am intrigued by the world and think the author is doing a good job revealing how it differs from ours. But, that contrasts with the clunky way the story is proceeding with big backstory chunks interspersed. I would like to like the MC but I haven't really connected with her.
I'm a little late to the discussion. I'm just 1/5 thru and while interesting, its mix of fantasy and current time (urban fantasy?) fights my suspension of disbelief and wins :)
I’m very late to the party, I started this several days ago and am about 2/3 though right now. I’m enjoying it quite a bit. I’m listening to it and the narrator is quite good (she sounds just like a younger Kate Mulgrew!!!). And I love the MC’s voice. Just enough sardonic humor so the book is prevented from becoming altogether too darn and depressing.
