Hey Christine, rather than putting a bunch of random books each in their own post you could post them together. Or say something about them?

Ava (avakroening) | 3 comments I know this is random, but I'm kind of new to Goodreads and I want to know how you add the cover of the book as a link to the book?

message 212: by Gord (new)

Gord | 999 comments When you click the "add book/author" link right above this message it will open a new window where you can search for the book you want to add. At the bottom of that window there are two options, "link" and "cover". Link just provides the name of the book as a link like this Something from the Nightside. If you click on the cover option you get Something from the Nightside (Nightside, #1) by Simon R. Green .

As a side note to this, if your cover is not the default one that comes up with your search you can click "other additions" below the add button. If there are other editions of the book it will list them all allowing you to choose the edition you want. Like this Something from the Nightside (Nightside, #1) by Simon R. Green فرستاده‌ای از نایت ساید (Nightside #1) by Simon R. Green Nightside (Nightside, #1) by Simon R. Green

Elena Granger | 1788 comments I'm still a bit frustrated and currently in Russia. Though the past month was hell of a crazy, I managed to finish a bunch of books from my TBR.

Mockingjay (The Hunger Games, #3) by Suzanne Collins - I remember many of you were pissed reading the book. But I loved it! :D
The Memory of Babel (The Mirror Visitor Quartet, #3) by Christelle Dabos - the series is amazing and I don't have the next book :D
If You Could Go Anywhere by Paige Toon One Perfect Summer (One Perfect #1) by Paige Toon - thanks Brittany for recommending me the author. Her books are so cute, warm and nice!
From Blood and Ash (Blood and Ash, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout - this one is definitely my favorite of the recent reads. So unique, passionate and intriguing. I think I finished it in 2 days or so.
Anchored Hearts by Priscilla Oliveras Cupcake by Cookie O'Gorman - two more romantic stories but those two were so-so.
All the Feels (Spoiler Alert, #2) by Olivia Dade - one more romantic story I loved! Such a nice, warm story.
The Court of Miracles (A Court of Miracles, #1) by Kester Grant - for many people this book was either great or a total disaster. I'm in the first group. Amazing start of the new captivating series.
All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr - it's good, the ending is good but for me such books are personal, emotional and never happy. That's why I'm trying not to read books about WW2.
Shop Till You Drop (Dead-End Job Mystery, #1) by Elaine Viets Murder Between the Covers (Dead-End Job Mystery, #2) by Elaine Viets - started a new cozy mystery series. Pretty easy to read. I didn't enjoyed the first one (I don't like the main theme which is plastic gold-diggers) but the second was better.
The Devil's Thief (The Last Magician, #2) by Lisa Maxwell - the series is good and I really want to read the next book but won't buy it probably until July.
Of Blood and Bone (Chronicles of The One, #2) by Nora Roberts The Rise of Magicks (Chronicles of The One, #3) by Nora Roberts - I loved the first book in the series (Year One) but was a bit disappointed with the next 2 though still 5 stars.
Daughter of the Moon Goddess (The Celestial Kingdom Duology, #1) by Sue Lynn Tan - that one is great except the romantic line, didn't like it at all. But the story itself is charming!

Elena good to hear from you! How is everything going in Russia??

On Mockingjay why did you love it?! I am always a fan of other views on a book :)
So glad you love Paige Toon, I found out about her because of Kay. I havent read the two you just did but I want to read them all.
Yay! Glad you join me on the love of Court of Miracles. I am impatiently waiting for news on book 2....
I didn't love All the Light We Cannot See but it was a good book. I'm listening to another WWII book right now and I agree with you. I probably need to take a break from them for a bit after this one.
I've heard that a few times now about the romance line in Daughter of the Moon Goddess. Still think Ill read it at some point.

Loved your update!

Love it Kay! Agree all the stars to River of Silver! So much love. What made Piranesi so weird?

message 219: by Elena (last edited Apr 02, 2022 01:33AM) (new)

Elena Granger | 1788 comments @Kay I've added 3 more books to my TBR after reading your list and also wonder, what made Piranesi weird?

@Brittany by God's grace fine for now.
As for Mockingjay nothing in particular but the whole thing made it for me. I also love when there is a trope with a betrayal which is not actually a betrayal, double-agent vibes. I also loved (view spoiler). Maybe I'm even biased here because I love Katniss so much for her kindness, rational thinking and bravery.
Regarding All the Light I think those books are not made to be loved, you just can't love a book about war, for a regular person it's unnatural. Those books are either good and very emotional or bad and you DNF them.
As for Daughter of the Moon Goddess, it definitely worth reading because of the story itself, it's gorgeous in the best asian traditions. Romantic line felt just somehow poorly connected to the story. If there was no romantic line at all, the story would have been also interesting and atmospheric.

Gord | 999 comments Another week of reading has passed

Wild River by Rodman Philbrick -3 Stars
A pretty quick read that I snagged at random from the library. These kids are selected for a special school program that involves them going white water rafting. During the trip the dam up river breaks flooding the gorge that they are in. They then have to survive until rescued. What follows is the usual survival stuff one would expect from a novel like this. It was an enjoyable read.

Circle Thrice (Deathlands, #32) by James Axler -3 Stars
Being a bit of a book funk I was looking for something mindless to read and these books always scratch that itch. It also helped that it helped with a particular challenge. It was what I expected from the series. Post apocalypse wasteland, mutated things, power crazed tyrants, the characters making questionable decisions, etc. Add in a splash of inbred mutated rednecks in the backwoods of Tennessee and you get the gist of the novel.

Girl, Alone (Ella Dark FBI Suspense Thriller #1) by Blake Pierce -3 Stars
This was a random pick for my next audio book. In the beginning of the book it was a solid four stars as it hit a trope I enjoyed. A young FBI desk jockey is recruited by the behavioral unit in a pilot program. She is paired with a grizzled old agent and sent out in the field to help catch a killer. Of course she has a particular set of skills that is just what is needed to catch this killer. It's not highbrow entertainment but I enjoy this kind of thing. Honestly the book was going fine until about the 50% mark. Then the book pulls out a trope I hate. It's not a book specific trope and I hate the trope it whatever form of entertainment it shows up in. The suspect likes X thing so that means 100% that they are a psychopath. Take your pick of what X is and I've seen it. Heavy metal, video games, D&D, comics, online chat rooms, etc. Any one who participates in that hobby is a violent psychopath just waiting to unless horrible things on the world. If they were to take a more nuanced approach were this hobby might be a factor and took time to explore it properly then I might be fine with it but that rarely happens. The suspect has a comic book so they are the next Jack the Ripper. It's just tiring. After this the book got back on course and was rather entertaining but that one section just left a stain on the book for me. I do plan to check out more in the future to see where the story goes though.

The Summer of You (My Summer of You Vol. 1) by Nagisa Furuya -3 Stars
This was a recommended manga for me and it was a simple and sweet story that I found entertaining. Two boys are friends, one confesses to the other, says it's not a big deal but asks to continue hanging out over the summer. I won't go much further then that so I don't spoil things. This was a high school romance but it none of the usual drama stuff associated with that. Like I said it was a simple and sweet story.

The Recount by Jonathan Hedrick -3 Stars
This was a random pick for me that I kind of regret picking up. I'm just glad I never had to pay for this. This is a thriller where the president of the USA is assassinated and a terrorist organization threatens the rest of the government and anyone who had voted for the president. How to get into this without setting off a land mine. The premise for the book is not that bad honestly but with the events in the world after the last few years it was just a little to close to reality for me. I'm not an American and I'm just an outsider looking in but the events in this book don't seem that crazy for me. Average citizens being encouraged to kill their neighbors based on the their voting choice doesn't feel like a stretch to me. We see plenty of tensions regarding who is voting for who and how those tensions can be escalated. After years of seeing this stuff in real life it's tiring. To then read it in my escape from all these kind of real world stresses just wasn't enjoyable for me.

Toriko, Vol. 24 by Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro Toriko, Vol. 25 by Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro Toriko, Vol. 26 Beyond The Limit by Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro Toriko, Vol. 27 Hidden Strength!! by Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro -4 Stars
This is all now firmly in the land of new material for me so I was a little surprised at the twist things took. This series looked like it was heading into a traditional tournament arc when suddenly the series opened up twist after twist with some pretty epic battles. I won't go into a lot because of spoilers but the direction of this novel just got shifted pretty hard and I am now very curious about what comes next.

xxxHOLiC Omnibus 3 by CLAMP -5 Stars
I have nothing but love for this series and that's that

Currently I'm listening to Something from the Nightside (Nightside, #1) by Simon R. Green on audio book

I'm also currently reading Gallant by V.E. Schwab which is alright so far

After that I'm thinking Taming Demons for Beginners (The Guild Codex Demonized #1) by Annette Marie and some more manga

It's only been some two years in the works to finally get to it. A year plus while waiting in queue as the library ordered the book. My hold then expired and I lost my place in queue and it's been nearly another year waiting to get to my turn with the book.

Gallant by V.E. Schwab -2 Stars
*sigh* I saw this come up in a new release challenge and I figured I'd give it a whirl. I read another series from this author and thought it was interesting and the synopsis for this seemed interesting. In the beginning I was into the vibe of the book and I thought the MC was interesting. About the 50% mark though I found myself just bored with everything. The book just felt like it was running in circles going no where and I was just wanting something to happen. Then I got to the end of the book and it was just more meh. Meh is honestly the best way I can describe this book. There are so many pages of repetitiveness, a mystery that is lackluster, characters that do little, and so on. This is one of those books where, as harsh as this sounds, I'm just glad it's over. Now I'm off to update my challenges and move on from this book.

I’m delayed with responding sorry guys. But @Elena and @Britt it’s just super strange. I listened to it on audio and I got to like 1.5 hours in and I couldn’t tell you what it was about, what was going on or anything. Nothing made sense at all! I do think it’s wrote like that purposefully as the narrator is not necessarily a reliable one, but it was just so weird. I didn’t have a clue what was going on or where this story was going for a good 70% of it. But I still ended up really enjoying it.

Ah that's such a shame Gord. I'm reading it at the moment, but I'm not very far through. I definitely prefer Schwab's adult fiction to her YA though, so my expectations for this I think are somewhat lower than they would usually be.

Jo Elliott | 1838 comments Finished The River of Silver Tales from the Daevabad Trilogy (The Daevabad Trilogy, #3.5) by S.A. Chakraborty , I liked it, but as with any short story collection, there were some I liked better than others. That final story with Nahri and Ali was just beautiful, I loved getting Zaynab's POV and would so read more stories about her and getting to see more of Jamshid and Muntadhir's relationship including its early development was great. There were a couple of stories I could have done without, like the Scout and a couple that I felt were a bit long, but overall I enjoyed it.

My next audiobook is one of my most anticipated reads of this year, The Diamond Eye by Kate Quinn . I'm only two chapters in, and I already know I'm going to love Mila!
