Tony (flintflash) | 48 comments Pixiegirl105, for you I choose The Song of Achilles The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller by Madeline Miller
I've heard great reviews for this book and think you would enjoy it.

I want to give a HUUUUGE 'Shout Out' to Estefania for recommending Watership Down (Watership Down, #1) by Richard Adams for me to read. It was simply incredible and I loved every aspect of this story. It has become a 'Favorite' of mine, so THANK YOU!

I am ready for my next suggested read, so if the next person could choose from my "Ready To Be Read" list for me. Thanks! :)

message 152: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay | 44 comments Tony,

For you I choose Murder On The Orient Express. I noticed you have a lot of Agatha Christie in your list, I read this one earlier in the year and found it to be an interesting, fun and quick read. I hope you like it as well!!!!! (It was hard to narrow it down to one choice, you’ve got lots of great books in your list).

Whomever chooses for me- I made a shorter ‘pick for me’ list so you don’t have to sort through them all if your inmate any to. But ANYTHING in my too be read is fair game 😊

I haven't read it yet, but it was recommended by a couple people and I have it on my TBR Rec list. I'd love to know how you liked it once you've read it."

Well it has been a bit since I've hopped on this thread. I was in a very "mood read" phase and was being picky with what I read haha. I'm now ready to come back and get a suggestion :) Before I do, I want to follow up on Black Sun (Between Earth and Sky, #1) by Rebecca Roanhorse . I gave it about a 3.5 but was definitely in the minority as most are rating 4+ stars. For me, I just don't think I was in the head space to try and follow what was going on in the first bit but it ended up being a very solid and enjoyable story.

Lindsay - for your next pick, I choose House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City, #1) by Sarah J. Maas . I have this on my TBR as well and would love to hear how you like it :)

For my next pick, please choose from the following shelf:

I just finished Matilda by Roald Dahl and really enjoyed it. I had seen the movie before, but hadn't read the book until now. I actually listened to the audiobook with my two teenage sons and they rated it 4.5 stars = )

Samantha, for you I pick Flowers for Algernon I recently re-read this book as an adult, I had read it before in high school years. It is a really good read.

For my next read please choose from my Paperback Bookshelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

For my first book, please choose from:

message 161: by Kim (new)

Kim | 17 comments Oh I like this concept, I always have so much trouble deciding on my next read...

Marla, it seems our tastes are so different that there's not much on your list that I actually know. So I decided to go for the one that's been waiting for you the longest: Touching Evil.

For my next pick anything from my Want to Read list goes, with a slight preference for no fantasy or SF if you want to narrow down the choice.

message 162: by Estefanía (last edited Aug 09, 2022 05:49PM) (new)

Estefanía | 188 comments I found The Queen's Gambit pretty okay. I don't know more than the basics of Chess (the name of the pieces and what they do), maybe if I knew more about the game a could have appreciated it more. However, I was surprised by how tense the matches could be. Thank you, Jojo.

Okay, no fantasy or science fiction. Well, A Study in Scarlet is my suggestion. It's never to late to start with Sherlock Holmes. It may not be the best one, but it must be read to be believed.

message 163: by Cheryl (last edited Aug 09, 2022 02:30PM) (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Thank you, Pixiegirl105, for picking Edge of Infinity for me and getting it off my list.

Estefania, I think you're looking for another read? If so, I recommend The Midwich Cuckoos. A little old-fashioned SF never hurts. And I have enjoyed others by Wyndham.

Next person please pick for me from my sony or android shelf, my ebooks: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list.... It'd be super helpful if you could pick a book that has between 100 and 200 pages.

Would appreciate a recommendation under 400 pages please =)

Thank you superawesomekt for picking The Glass Castle for me, it was a good read. I had to keep reminding myself that it was a memoir because at points in the story it almost felt like it was fiction.

Kaseadillla, for you I pick The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides. I read this book recently and it was a quick read for me, because I just had to know what was happening next!

For my next read please pick from my Paperback Bookshelf:

message 167: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) I'm dnf'ing The Stranger. I'm glad it's off my list, but sad I couldn't get through a short classic. (Too dark.)

Mariah: I recommend Planetfall. I've read it twice. And I've read the sequels, but I didn't find them as appealing. (Nor are they necessary at all; they're more like 'companion' novels.)

For you Cheryl, I pick The Scarlet Pimpernel
I have not read this book, but it seems to get nominated quite often as a classic pick for monthly voting. So I'm hoping it will be a good choice for your next read.

Lindsay! It was hard to pick, you own a few classics I've read and loved, but I opted for something more unexpected and fun. For you I choose Oryx and Crake. The whole series is great. A bit strange and unexpected, in a good way.

Thanks for choosing Planetfall for me, Cheryl. It was entertaining and I've been on a science fiction kick, so it fit right in.

For my next read, please choose from my "books I own" list, but I'm not sure if it shows you the ones I haven't read? If it doesn't, anything from my Want to Read is fine. Thank you!

message 176: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) JoJo_theDoDo, thank you for The Scarlet Pimpernel. It was much more fun and accessible, and thoughtful, than I expected.

Cheryl (cherylllr) JoJo_theDoDo, thank you for The Scarlet Pimpernel. It was more fun, thoughtful, and accessible than I expected it to be.

Mariah, I recommend The Poisonwood Bible. I put it off for a long time as I was intimidated by the size, but I still gave it five stars.

Next person, please choose a book that's between 100 and 200 pages (in other words, not too long or too short!) from my "sony or android" shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

message 178: by Jennifer (last edited Sep 04, 2022 08:11AM) (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) Finally finished my last pick! Good mystery, other challenge-deadline books just kept interfering. Death Is Like a Box of Chocolates

Cheryl, I'm picking Roast Beef Medium: The Business Adventures of Emma McChesney for you. I like Ferber.

To whomever, please pick from my Very Next Up Shelf.

message 179: by JoJo_theDodo (last edited Sep 07, 2022 10:20AM) (new)

JoJo_theDodo Thank you Lindsay for suggesting The Giver of Stars! I really enjoyed this story a lot!

Jennifer, for you I pick Finding Dorothy by Elizabeth Letts.
I listened to this story on audio and it was a book club selection for me. It was a good story and I hope you'll enjoy it.

To the next bookish friend, please pick from my Paperback Bookshelf:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

message 180: by Cheryl (last edited Sep 09, 2022 03:24PM) (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Jennifer, I did indeed enjoy Roast Beef Medium by Ferber and will read more by her later.

JoJo the DoDo, have you really not read Jane Eyre yet? Tsk. 'Course, I didn't until I was in my late forties, so I shouldn't scold. Anyway, when I finally did, I gave it four stars. I hope you like it.

Next person please pick for me from my sony or android shelf, my ebooks: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list.... Please pick a book that has between 100 and 200 pages! It's a challenge for me to read ebooks (that's how my list got so long!)

message 181: by JoJo_theDodo (new)

JoJo_theDodo Thank you Cheryl for picking Jane Eyre. I have been on an audiobook kick lately so I listened to this version that is a combination of Jane Eyre and The Secret Garden: Alison Larkin Presents Jane Eyre and The Secret Garden by Alison Larkin
I have had both of these classics on my TBR for quite a long time and I loved them both!

I know you said you wanted a shorter book, but I saw a book on your list that is one I loved and gave 5 stars. So I have to recommend to you: The One-in-a-Million Boy by Monica Wood. This was a book that was recommended to me and I hope you'll enjoy it!

For my next read, please pick from my Paperback Bookshelf:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

Lena (lenaw) | 88 comments Cheryl wrote: "[...] Lena, The Word for Woman is Wilderness looks fascinating. I recommend that you read it, and then come back and tell us if you recommend it. :)"

Thank you Cheryl for choosing this very interesting and very unique book for me. Unfortunately life came in the way and it took me ages to pick it up and to finally start reading it. In the end I must say that it might not have been my all-time favorite book but it was a very unique writing style and a moving story. I could find myself and my thoughts in the story every now and then - even though I might not agree with all feminist thoughts shared by the character. Overall, definitely a very good read. Thank you for finally making me read it!

@JoJo_theDoDo: As Homegoing is one of my favorite reads of the year and as I would recommend it anytime, I decided to choose it as your next read. I hope you'll enjoy it.

Please choose a book from my ‚Bookcase_unread‘ shelf.
https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...
Thank you!

message 183: by Estefanía (new)

Estefanía | 188 comments Thank you, Cheryl. It was a nice book. Although, I wished the we got to see things play out instead of having the aftermath narrated.

For Lena I pick Carmilla. I like to being the spooky season a month early. It along with Polidori's The Vampyre crawled so Dracula could run.

message 184: by Pixiegirl105 (new)

Pixiegirl105 | 64 comments Finished The Song of Achilles. It was decent but it's hard to beat Mary Renault when considering mythology brought alive.

For Estefania, I choose Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. It's a little spooky which is perfect for October.

message 185: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Ok, yes, The One-in-a-Million Boy was a good read. I think I'd like it more when I'm a widow and older, though.

Pixiegirl105, I pick for you Project Hail Mary. Those of us who were disappointed by Artemis after loving The Martian enjoyed this more mature adventure.

Next person please pick for me from my sony or android shelf, my ebooks: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list.... Please pick a book that has between 100 and 150 pages! It's a challenge for me to read ebooks (that's how my list got so long!)

Thank you Lena for picking Homegoing for me. It was a great multi-generational story.

Tony, since we're going into October and spooky season I figured why not read some Stephen King. So, I picked Billy Summers for you from your list.

message 188: by Estefanía (new)

Estefanía | 188 comments Thank you, Pixiegirl105. It just wasn't my cup of tea. It started strong, but kind of lost me in the middle. It would then started to ram up again, but ended abruptly. The ideas like the inclusion pictures were interesting, however some were better integrated than others. It may all be because it's the first part of a series.

DoDo, it's the witchiest time of the year, so you might enjoy Howl’s Moving Castle.

message 189: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Tony, thank you so much for the heartwarming and interesting The Stranger Who Lived in a Merry-Go-Round.

Estefania, assuming you want anything from your to-read shelf, I suggest I, Robot. Some critics might say it's dated, but I say Asimov's robot stories are classics and still relevant, especially, to questions of what it means to be human.

Next person please pick for me from my sony or android shelf, my ebooks: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list.... Please pick a book that has between 100 and 150 pages! It's a challenge for me to read ebooks (that's how my list got so long!)

Cheryl, for you I chose Marta Oulie. I did struggle to find a book with your page requirements that was not a children's tale, but this sounded interesting, although probably not the quick read you were hoping for.

For my next read, anything from my 'Want to read' goes.

superawesomekt | 264 comments Lindsay, for you I pick A Deadly Education, as I think it's a good fit for October. Also, the third book just came out, so it's not a bad time to start the series :)

Lena, I enjoyed As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow and would definitely recommend it to others, though it is set in conflict-torn Syria, so sensitive readers would need to keep that in mind (i.e. lots of death and trauma). That being said, I didn't think any of the more difficult content was very graphic / gratuitous and there were definitely threads of hope woven throughout (a must for me). I would say it's appropriate for young teenagers + and it reads a bit like young adult fiction (maybe it is?). Anyway, if you are interested in Syrian refugees, it's very accessible historical fiction. Thanks for the pick!
