Originally published in 1954.

Thomas Charles Betterton, a famous scientist, has vanished. Conflicting reports of sightings of the missing man have come in from all over Europe. Then, his wife of six months decides to take a holiday to Morocco for a rest.

That's when a strange and surprising series of events begins to unfold. A superb and different mystery from a master at her best.

Melinda Loustalot | 2 comments I'm 2/3 through and surprised at the Cold War theme (I expected the usual mystery) tho I guess it's natural for the time the book was written. Also surprised at how certain parts of the story bring to mind the global governance theories (or not so theoretical) circulating now in this year "post-pandemic." Have these types of events ALWAYS gone on behind the scenes? I'd love to know Agatha's inspiration for this story line and more about her research for it.

Heather L (wordtrix) | 148 comments I listened to a free audiobook version today that I found on YouTube. Neither the Cold War aspect nor the recruitment of scientists surprised me, as she has used both before. More suspense/spy novel than mystery, but I liked it.

If anyone is interested in listening to the book, the audio version is only three hours fifteen minutes:
