Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Hey, look! "Cowgirl in the Sand" - Neil Young, is #1. I love that one! And I love CCR's "Heard it Through the Grapevine", and Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile."

I'm not as familiar with Kraftwerk as I'd like. Sorry, RA. And I feel positively ashamed not to know the Sleater-Kinney one, because I LIVE in their town.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Van Morrison's Madame George is my fave long song @ 9:48. I would love to put it on a mix, but it never fits.

Félix (habitseven) I'll never forget hearing Alice's Restaurant for the first time on FM radio. In those days, FM stations were either weird, college-based operations, or public radio that played only classical stuff. WRPI in Troy, NY was the place on dial we stayed tuned as we drove around in my van, under the influence of, well ... various stuff.

They would sometimes play continuous music for hours on end, with only the required station ID thrown in.
Ah, those were the days.

Alice's Restaurant was one of our anthems.

message 7: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) I love to sing antems.

message 8: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I'll give you an antem.

message 9: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Personally, as to long songs. I've sat through five hours of Tristan and Isolde in Chicago. If I could, I'd go to Seattle for the full Ring Cycle. So don't you people whine about a ten minute song. Sheehs. Wimps.

What about Queen, "Bohemian Rhapsody?" Or Meatloaf's "Paradise by the Dashboard Lights?"

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

Stephen wrote, What about Queen, "Bohemian Rhapsody?" Or Meatloaf's "Paradise by the Dashboard Lights?"

They're not 10 minutes long.

Some notable omissions, in my opinion:

- The extended version of Rare Earth's "Get Ready."
- "Supper's Ready" by Genesis
- "Xanadu" by Rush (yeah, yeah, I know...)
- "Halleluwah" by Can

message 11: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Cowgirl in the Sand is the only one on the list I really know and like. Neil is pretty much the only reason to listen to a 10 minute plus song.

I wonder if Wolf Parade's Kissing the Beehive was named after the Jonathan Carroll book?

message 12: by David (new)

David (bowsertheturtle) i did a random search and came up with a few..

Shine On You Crazy Diamond - Pink Floyd (26:01)
Alice's Restaurant - Arlo Guthrie (18:36)
Freebird Live - Lynyrd Skynyrd (14:09)
The Rime of the Ancient Mariner - Iron Maiden (13:36)
The Devil to Pay - Iced Earth (12:13)
The End - The Doors (11:44)
I Heard It Through the Grapevine - Creedence Clearwater Revival (11:06)
Freebird - Lynyrd Skynyrd (9:07)
November Rain - by Guns N' Roses (8:57)
Life's Been Good To Me So Far - Joe Walsh (8:56)
American Pie - Don McLean (8:34)
Kashmir - Led Zeppelin (8:28)
Paradise By The Dashboard Light - Meatloaf (8:28)
You Can't Always Get What You Want - Rolling Stones (7:30)
Suite: Judy Blue Eyes - Crosby, Stills, Nash (7:30)
Champagne Supernova - Oasis (7:28)
Hotel California - Eagles (7:12)

pretty much anything by pink floyd, and a lot by dream theater and other symphonic metal, and i know im missing a whole lot of other stuff, but these were just a few, i dont really mind long songs, especially the ones from whom i like to listen to.. =D

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

KD, does anyone ever want to admit In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida is a good 10+ minute song?

message 14: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I don't.

message 15: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) I love it.

message 16: by David (new)

David (bowsertheturtle) its not that i don't think its good, its just not one of my favorites is all..

message 17: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) What's wrong with it? And don't even try to tell me there were no drugs in ya'lls past.

message 18: by David (new)

David (bowsertheturtle) like i said, nothing really, its just i prefer to listen to other songs..

alcohol or caffeine is it for me, unless somewhere along the way i had a contact high but if i did i didn't realize it.. and i only started on the alcohol a month or two before i turned 21..

message 19: by Félix (last edited Oct 08, 2009 10:10AM) (new)

Félix (habitseven) That song takes me back to a dorm room at Clemson University in 1969, with a towel under the door to keep in the odor of the magic herb, the black light on as the music went on and on.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

Room 222 Larry?

message 21: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) That is a suspicious room number. Were you cool like the TV show?

message 22: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) No, it was on the 4th floor.

message 23: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) That would be room number 420. hehehehehe

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

That's right Stephen.

message 25: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) :-)

Sarah | 13814 comments David wrote: "i did a random search and came up with a few..."

But David, you're including songs under 10 minutes! If we're just going for longer-than-usual pop songs, I have a whole bunch I want to add around the seven or eight minute mark.

message 27: by David (new)

David (bowsertheturtle) o i didn't realize excuse me for not reading everything properly =-o there still a good amount of songs that long though, excuse half of my list i guess..

message 28: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Not a critique! I just wanted to be able to list all my favorites if the rules had relaxed.

message 29: by David (new)

David (bowsertheturtle) well i don't mind, as you could see, i think anything long enough that they don't usually play on the radio is long enough to be a long song, that's what i was going by =\

message 30: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I think your guideline actually makes more sense than a simple minute mark, since that's what we're talking about when we talk about long songs. A long song is one that is only played on the radio when the DJ:
a)needs to go to the bathroom
b)needs to entertain his/her girlfriend/boyfriend
c)needs a smoke of some sort
d)all of the above

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

I have a co-worker who does the weekend shifts at a local radio station here. He refers to 10+ minute songs as "poop songs." Hence us calling him "DJ Poop Song."

message 32: by David (new)

David (bowsertheturtle) what if it takes longer then the song? i mean i don't know about you guys but there's been times where i've been in the bathroom longer then that.. =-o, i'm not sure if putting a time limit on pooping is healthy, its not like it could just go back in so easily...

That's the beauty of automation. Nowadays, you can queue up the next couple of songs ahead of time, so as long as you don't need to do a station ID break during that time, you're probably safe.

message 36: by David (new)

David (bowsertheturtle) hmm, i guess that might work, but i still dont trust it...

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

Nothing by the Mars Volta? They managed to include Berzum (?!?), but not the Mars Volta.

message 38: by Joe (new)

Joe (attometer) Glad to see Television's Marquee Moon near the top. Low, Sun Kil Moon and Sigur Ros are also among my favorites. I sort of expected to see something from GYBE since, I think, every song they have is over 10 minutes.

message 39: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Sun Kil Moon is awesome, no doubt...

Her Majesty (hermajesty) | 122 comments meet Um Kalthoum, one of our Arab classicals. I can't stand her, but she has a well deserved national record for "long" songs.

40+ minutes

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

40+ minutes? Wow.

Speaking of which, I have a live version of John Coltrane performing My Favorite Things, from a pretty rare recording of a gig he did in Japan. Running time for that song? 57 minutes!. I am not kidding.

message 42: by Her (new)

Her Majesty (hermajesty) | 122 comments Impressive. this could turn out to be a competition, and I think I have a good shot

Road trips, the only time these long songs come in handy. Other than that, am not sure.
