So sorry to hear that Helen. I hope it's not for too much longer. Could you try listening to audiobooks to help pass the time? Also let your visitors know to bring you something nice to eat, as hospital food can get boring very quickly.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments /I’ve had reading lights before but they were mostly a bit cumbersome or unreliable and fairly quickly ended up in a drawer.
I was convinced to give these new ones a try. I’ve been using them for a while now, so I thought I’d offer an honest opinion.
What I really like about the Glocusent LED Neck Reading Light:
• It’s very light (128g) so you barely notice you’re wearing it.
• The arms are very flexible so you can aim the lights where you want.
• The lights easily light up the whole double page of a trade paperback
• The unit charges via a USB-C cord so there’s no messing with dead batteries. It takes about 2 hours to fully charge.
• When fully charged it lasts between 8 hours (torch bright) and 76 hours (perfect for night-time reading). depending on the colour and brightness you choose.
• It offers three different colours of light so you can decide what’s easiest on your eye or suits your needs or the conditions.
• Each colour of light can be set to three levels of brightness.
• You can set the timer to go off after 30 minutes.
• LED means little or no heat generated
• It would be great for travelling: light, compact, easy to charge, long lasting
• Use for hands free work that needs light, needlework, knitting…
• Use to illuminate when you don’t want to turn the houselights on
What I like less about the LED Neck Reading Light:
• I haven’t come across anything so far.

Here's me using it for my bedtime read:

An alert by Dorie in another group. This person is stealing reviews and posting them as his own - I've blocked him so he won't see mine. A good idea to do the same. He has been reported... https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/1...

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments Getting to the pointy end of things now, with our move, needing to get rid of furniture the purchasers don't want to keep. Charity shops are full up and don't have room for any furniture.
DH has been trying to get rid of stuff on Facebook Marketplace for nominal sums $5, $10, but mostly that's just frustration: bargaining down or "can you deliver it?"
We'll have a skip tomorrow but have started putting things on the front lawn. A pine chest of drawers was gone within hours of putting it out, along with the column heater that doesn't work but was waiting for the skip. I guess that might come back.....
ATM there's a single bed out there, but it will be joined by a wardrobe and a divan and eventually a double bed, 2 2-seater leather lounges, a leather chair, pine wardrobes, a desk, a clothes dryer. It will be interesting to see how much of it actually ends up in the skip.
We settled on this house Friday have 4 weeks renting it, then have to put our stuff into storage and rent elsewhere until our unit is ready. On Thursday we heard that won't be mid-August, but maybe mid-October???? Fingers crossed we're in before Christmas.

Oh how frustrating Marianne!! Just like Jools had to do - move twice! A shame things can't be done when they say they will be, but that's the way of the world these days it seems!! Good luck with getting rid of what you don't want/need, and renting somewhere near to your new place, with the way the rental market is at the moment too...

message 1084: by Carolyn (last edited Jul 09, 2023 12:22AM) (new)

Carolyn | 9837 comments I was hoping your apartment would be finished in time for you to move there straight from your house. Such bad luck if that's not the case. It's also hard finding short term rentals for a few weeks unless you can find a holiday rental that doesn't cost the earth. Good luck with re-homing your furniture - hopefully a lot will go from your kerb.
You could also try Nextdoor (au.nextdoor.com) - a neighbourhood site. I'm in our local group and as well as listing furniture for sale/free, people are also send out messages to the local group and it seems to get picked up pretty quickly.

Thanks Carolyn, I'll have a look at that. Seems such a waste to throw perfectly servicible furniture in a skip

When I had to clear my mother's house a second hand furniture shop (not a charity) took nearly all of it. They didn't pay me anything but they took the lot for free which made things much easier for me. I assume they made some money on it.

DH did try a few, but all said they have no room to store any furniture ATM. I wonder if people in COVID lockdown did lots of decluttering ...

message 1088: by Helen (new)

Helen (helen57) | 3411 comments That is not good news, fingers crossed it is finished quicker than they say and that you find homes for all of the furniture

Are there any services helping refugees in your area - they might be able to rehome furniture.
Another thought is UoW as they must have mid year international students currently setting up accomodation. You might be able to send them a flyer to put on a student noticeboard.

I agree these are charitable options I wish we could look at, but we need the stuff gone quickly, and still have packing to do. It will go out on the front lawn until it has to go into the skip :(

message 1091: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn | 9837 comments I'm sure you'll find a lot of it will disappear off your lawn to other homes, especially now the kerb crawlers know you're having a big clean out.

message 1094: by Marianne (new)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments We've been filling up the skip, but from the lawn have disappeared so far: big heavy oak wardrobe, chest of drawers, non-working column heater, two lawn mowers, a bike helmet, a concrete skull (men!!) a surfboard, a clown planter, a very old Hoover upright vacuum cleaner.

My husband came wandering home this morning with 2 hanging plant baskets. The neighbour up the road had put them out for council cleanup.

message 1097: by PattyMacDotComma (new)

PattyMacDotComma | 3299 comments We had people moving INTO the neighbourhood, and when they'd put some things on the lawn from the back of the vehicle to go into the house, someone had collected them before they got back outside to get them!

People are quick!

I don't know the people, Brenda, but I think it was pillows and such, not major furniture items. It seems it was probably an honest mistake, but maybe we need signs saying MOVING DAY - NOT A GARAGE SALE!
