Just back from a Dymock's Literary Lunch where Alexander McCall Smith was the guest speaker. I think it is the third time I have seen him speak but he is just so good! Very funny too. He had three hundred people there listening intently, laughing lots and clapping very loudly at the end. Well worth going to 🤗

Well done Phrynne! I remember you saying pretty much the same thing about him last time you saw him. Good he comes to Australia fairly often.

Sounds like you had a very enjoyable lunch Phrynne. I can imagine him being as entertaining as his books!

I wondered if you were there, Phrynne. I got to ask a question, about his new series. The dessert was incredible, and AMS was very entertaining, as always.

Trish (trishr) | 1109 comments What a wonderful afternoon for you both, Phrynne and Marianne, listening to such an entertaining writer/speaker. Remember listening to him a few years back at the Cremorne Cinema and he had everyone enthralled with his stories and wit.

PS...dessert doesn't look bad either, Marianne 😉

I looked for you Marianne but the event was so huge it was hard to spot anyone!
The dessert was indeed delicious but it looked very odd!!!
And how did they colour the meringue pieces grey?

It really did look like a collection of stuff you'd find washed up on a beach.
I looked for you too, but there were so many people...

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments My DH is so clever! He put some stuff on Facebook marketplace and got an enquiry about house plants. Today a young couple with three kids drove away with almost all our pot plants, some of which were quite raggedy. She was very happy, her hubby was benignly tolerant and now I only have one plant to water until we go.

Trish L | 139 comments I'm keeping my eye out for this year's translated book give away on Kindle, but so far cannot find any info online or on kindle itself. Only a reference to last years' does anyone know when if and when it will be?
Thanks

Trish L | 139 comments I have been searching my (five) libraries for an e copy of both Hamnet and American Dirt - on both Overdrive and Borrow Box. Only hard copies are available. Seems odd that the libraries would not offer these two best selling books in e format. Can anybody shed some light on this? Thanks.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments In the mail today, they look very fancy, three light shades, three brightness levels, the neck one has the option of a 30 minute timer. And they recharge via USB or USB-C
Can't wait to try these out! Will review when I've had a good go at them.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments Here's my review of the Glocusent Portable Clip-on Reading Light
What I really like about it:
• It’s very light (40g) so barely adds any weight to your book
• The light can swivel to the page you are reading.
• It charges via a USB port so there’s no messing with dead batteries. It takes just over 2 hours to fully charge.
• When fully charged it lasts between 9½ hours (torch bright) and just over 57 hours (perfect for night-time reading) depending on the colour and brightness you choose.
• It offers five different colours of light so you can decide what’s easiest on your eye or suits your needs or the conditions.
• Each colour of light can be set to three levels of brightness.
• LED means no heat generated
• It would be great for travelling: light, compact, easy to charge, long lasting.
What I like less about the Portable Clip-On Reading Light:
• Clipping onto the page means the light doesn’t cover both pages without swivelling

Here's the light doing a fine job on one of my favourite reads this year (thanks Toni Jordan):
Thanks Glocusent for this device to test and review.

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments Brenda wrote: "Great review Marianne - it seems dark down the bottom of the page though..."

That's probably due to my phone trying to balance with a bright light at one end of the page. It really is well-lit for the whole page.

Wondering if it clamps securely to the pages/cover without slipping? And does it leave an indent on the pages at all? I'm one of those annoying people who likes to keep books in as pristine condition as possible, lmao.

message 981: by Marianne (new)

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments Sharon, it slides on like a paper clip, so I guess it depends how many pages you slide it onto. Didn't mark the book I used at all.

I borrowed it from the library, found it so, so good, very true to Fredrik Backman's book for an American adaptation

I did indeed see it in the cinema some time back. It was a good adaptation but very Americanised of course.

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry is soon to be released as a movie too. It was made in England and the trailer made it look excellent.

We don't use them (we have a compost bin in the garden). Are they the compostable ones which are stretchy and pretty easy to tear?

Looks great Marianne. Will you be close enough to walk to the downtown shops and restaurants? And more importantly will you have to find new places to go for your walk in the morning?

When we move, we won't have a compost bin, so will have to use them. And I wouldn't say they're stretchy. They split and tear even as you're putting them in the FOGO, and they are too small for the FOGO bin, useless!!

Carolyn, very close to all the essentials, including shops, restaurants, the hospital and the railway station. And I can easily walk to the beach for a daily photo...
