I'll look into this one more now - thanks! I've seen it floating around by other people, so there must be something good about it :)

Simon | 214 comments I finished over the weekend, my July's pick for my historical fiction book club The Next Ship Home: A Novel of Ellis Island.

At the same time, I started reading over weekend the historical fiction novel The Paper Daughters of Chinatown.

Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Rachel (arkinandco) | 29 comments Paper Daughters sounds like it might be an interesting book. I am going to start reading it soon. It is so much fun to have an author there to discuss and explain their book.

So far I am quite enjoying The Paper Daughters of Chinatown :)

As for the book club meeting, well whenever we have an author coming, we ask members for questions ahead of time so that they are more engaged with the author. See how this one goes!

Thanks for the suggestion. The Goodreads review although few are excellent.

Simon | 214 comments Hey, sorry I've been off the grid on here for a little while. I still have to write my reviews on them but finished this month in the historical fiction genre The Paper Daughters of Chinatown & The Rebel Nun.

message 113: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (arkinandco) | 29 comments Thanks for the recommendation. I have The Paper Daughters of Chinatown on my wish list at the library.

Another interesting book. Thanks. At first I thought it would be Agatha Christie.

Rachel (arkinandco) | 29 comments Disappearing Earth

I am about 2/3 of the way through this book. It is very interesting, more a sort of interrelated short stories than a novel. Similar to in Elizabeth Strout in some ways. I am really enjoying it.

Rachel (arkinandco) | 29 comments There have been several movies about this subject. Disturbing to say the least.

More atrocities by the Catholic Church . . . eye opening

message 120: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (arkinandco) | 29 comments Yes, it is eye opening and shudder inducing. Religion can and does get off the track of their missions. Not just the Catholics. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Simon | 214 comments Started earlier ‘The Last Green Valley‘ by Mark Sullivan for my historical fiction zoom book club’s September pick.

message 122: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (arkinandco) | 29 comments My library does not have that book nor it is possible to recommend it for purchase by them. It has been reviewed so many times on GR, I am surprised.

Simon | 214 comments Finished over weekend, my historical fiction novel for September The Last Green Valley.

Hi Simon, recently, I got reading into biographies. Some I read in Polish, so I don't even post them here on GD. Anyway, I really liked the Taster and the Traitor by this author. The Sculptress wasn't for me. I still want to read The Irishman's Daughter. The Magdalen Girls, I'm not sure if I want to read. It's one of those subjects that I've heard about before, and I'd rather read something I haven't heard about yet :)

Prior to this novel, I've only read The Irishman's Daughter. A book club member told me they read The Magdalen Girls, and said it was good - so I decided to read it :)

Simon, I'm glad that this resonated with you, but it certainly wasn't for me. That's what I call chick-lit melodrama.

My library does not have any of her work. Too bad as the review sounds great.

message 133: by Simon (new)

Simon | 214 comments Request it maybe? Most libraries I imagine have a way to suggest new purchases :)

message 134: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (arkinandco) | 29 comments Yes, mine does but not for that author. I am not always certain why some are and some are not. My library uses Libby.

message 135: by Simon (new)

Simon | 214 comments You should still have a way to request via library even if the book doesn’t appear in Overdrive as a recommendation. Mine does :)

Simon | 214 comments A very late (but better than never) review of The Rebel Nun, as I read this historical fiction novel back in July.

If I request a book the library does not own, underneath it lists a few books that are not owned with an option to recommend them. I have not noticed anywhere that I can type in another book. Have I missed something?

Annette (annetteshistoricalfiction) | 150 comments The Mitford Affair
The Mitford Affair by Marie Benedict

5/5 The Mitford Affair reimagines the lives of the Mitford sisters who dominated the English political and social scenes between the World Wars. The family starts struggling to keep up the good image when one marries a fascist leader and another is rumored to be Hitler’s mistress.

My library has an option to suggest ebook purchases via Overdrive or “Library Dashboard” - we’re given 5 suggestions per month. Maybe contact your library - they may be set up differently.

Simon | 214 comments Just finished The Unknown Beloved by Amy Harmon - a historical fiction/mystery that’s set in the 1930s Chicago/Cleveland - combines Great Depression time period with mobsters/serial killer that roamed Cleveland in the 30s called “Torso Killer” - 4 stars!

message 144: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (arkinandco) | 29 comments Another one my library does not have but I put a reserve on The Law of Moses by Amy Harmon that is listed as a suspense novel.

message 145: by Simon (new)

Simon | 214 comments Hi Rachel,

I’ve heard of that one but haven’t read it. The only ones by Amy Harmon I’ve read are: The Songbook of Benny Lament, The Unknown Beloved & Where the Lost Wander.

message 146: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (arkinandco) | 29 comments She has written quite a few books from what my library offers but not the ones you mention. Drat.
